‘Gangs of London’ Episode 4: Who tried to kill Sean? Not Ed, Alex, Luan or Asif, here's the real mastermind
A gunshot aimed at the only person who can take his dead father's place, a brother who is addicted to heroin, an undercover cop who takes the shot, and a waitress who was hiding at the family mansion only to take his life - can ‘Gangs of London’ get any better with that thrilling and exhilarating set of events?
Sean Wallace (Joe Cole) has many enemies after London's most powerful criminal - his father Finn Wallace's (Colm Meaney) brutal death. But why do they want the son's life too? The fourth episode of the Sky Atlantic original created by Gareth Evans and Matt Flannery leaves one too many unsolved riddles. The summary reads: “Elliot’s (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù) loyalty is tested by an increasingly suspicious Ed Dumani (Lucian Msamati). Sean throws a dinner in an attempt to unite the two families. Alexander (Paapa Essiedu) is asked to meet with some of Finn’s old contacts.”
In a flashback from the past, Finn can be seen celebrating his partner's son Alex's success. “Alex did good. Ten billion dirty yen,” he says. He then turns to Ed, “And you said we couldn't do it. Denied your own son.” Meanwhile, his own son's awkwardness creeps through the shadows. Trying to step his way in, Sean puts on a smile as his father lectures him: “You do your job, Sean. What will you do when I am not here? You have to deliver. You're a Wallace. A Wallace. Everything hangs upon our name.” As pressure builds on him, the scene distinctly spells it out: Finn preferred Alex to his son.
Now, someone is trying to get Sean out of the way and here are all our best bets:
Is it the Dumani duo: Ed and Alex?
Were Ed and Alex plotting against Sean since the beginning? That is something left to unravel. As the fourth episode comes to a close, the Dumani duo attends a private dinner where we are introduced to Jevan Kapadia (Ray Panthaki) who wishes to deal only with Alex, not Sean. Knowingly, Ed keeps Sean out of the lavish party and tells Alex to shush. If you remember, Ed is the same man who killed Finn's driver and made it look like a suicide.
Known as the keeper of Finn's secrets, Ed seems to have chalked out a few plans that no one knows about. However, it doesn't seem likely that he ordered the gunshot on Sean. Even in the game of money, he would want to protect his best friend's son, wouldn't he?
Is it Luan?
While Sean is having a relaxed time with his family at the dinner he organized, he suddenly gets a call from Albanian mafia leader Luan Dushaj (Orli Shuka). For the longest time, the Wallace family had been suspecting the Albanians for Finn's murder and it is quite mysterious when Luan suddenly calls him out of the blue.
Turns out Luan has landed himself in a soup with a Nigerian gang. Now, he owes the head of the organization, Mosi (Richard Pepple), and he blackmails Sean with pictures of a family he had murdered for Finn. Now, Luan wants to extract money from Sean so it is unlikely that he would try to kill him. Moreover, when the muzzle flash comes on his forehead, Luan alerts him to duck out of the way.
Is it Asif?
Sean has made an enemy out of Asif Afridi (Asif Raza Mir) - the Pakistani heroin kingpin and the father of politician son Nasir Afridi (Parth Thakerar) running for Mayor of London. In the last episode, Sean struck a deal with Lale (Narges Rashidi) and she expressed her desire to kill the one most precious to Asif as revenge for the 2014 massacre in which Asif's men tortured and killed her husband.
Sean and Lale shared a moment of passion as the former assured that he would maker her bigger than Asif. The reason? He is sure Lale is not behind Finn's death. Now, Asif's men are spying on Sean and they know how close Lale has gotten to Sean. In the fourth episode, Asif calls his son Nasir and tells him to do something. When Nasir tells him he is busy with his political plans, it's quite likely that Asif ordered a hitman for Sean. But, somehow the puzzle pieces don't fit in. After all, Asif still depends on the Wallace family and he wouldn't want to lose that support, would he?
Is it Jevan Kapadia?
Now that we have ruled out all of these men, there's only one person left: Jevan Kapadia. His role is still unknown in the entire game but what we do know is that he is the point of contact between the investors who want to determine the future of the Wallace Organisation, and the Dumanis. Moreover, he wants Sean out of the way. With all the mystery around his character, it seems probable that the waitress in Sean's house who aimed the bullet at him was a part of his clan.
So, as per our prediction, Kapadia could turn out to be the real mastermind as the makers play with viewers' minds by involving them in revenge plots by the Dumanis, Albanians and Pakistanis.
Directed by Corin Hardy and written by Peter Berry and Joe Murtagh, the episode depicts one of the best showdowns in its final 15 minutes. "The last scene of this episode is one of the best pieces of television I have ever seen," one fan said in a Reddit thread. Another wrote, "Came here to say exactly this. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Everything that was going, the changing of perspectives, plus the music, damn this show is fucking amazing."
One viewer went on to post, "Oh man, this show is so shockingly brutal but that may be the nastiest episode so far. I had to look away as I was cringing during the hammer to the knee bit. Then there's that bit where the guy that forced Elliot to do that get shot in the head. That sniper was damn powerful. Completely splattered. I knew he was gonna die when he got cut off before telling Sean that Elliot's a cop but they still made it shocking. Couldn't help but laugh at the madness of that last scene in the family house. The mum tries to take the kid away from Elliot bleeding out on the table only to end up in another room where Billy's shooting up heroin. Nice final shot too."
‘Gangs of London’ premiered on AMC Plus on Thursday, October 1, 2020. The first three episodes aired on the premiere date and the rest of the 10-part series will be followed by weekly episodes on Thursdays.
