'Fear the Walking Dead' Season 6 Episode 4 Preview: Mysterious murder investigation instills John with doubts
Morgan's (Leslie Jones) group have all suffered in various ways under Virginia's (Colby Minifie) rule, but some are in a much better bargaining position than others. In Episode 2, we saw Strand (Colman Domingo) earn an important promotion, but he's not the only one who is tentatively in Virginia's good books. The next episode of 'Fear the Walking Dead' sees what's been happening with John Dorie (Garret Dillahunt). Despite his separation from his new bride, June (Jenna Elfman) so soon after their wedding at Virginia's hand, he's working as one of her rangers - and he seems dedicated to doing the best job he can.
The trailer for the episode shows John adjusting to the respect that comes with life as a ranger. He's also quite dedicated to making sure the people that he's been placed in charge of are kept safe. He's not just going along with Virginia's suggestion to mentally manipulate the populace into feeling safe - actual safety is his priority. That's going to be a challenge, however, when he's called in to get to the bottom of a "mysterious death" - and something about the investigation is going to make John question everything he thought he knew about himself. John has plenty of reasons for self-doubt, given that he's working for the enemy, but what is it about this death in particular that makes John stop and question himself? He's no stranger to death, or even to murder - the only thing that changes from death to death is the question of who's involved, meaning that someone connected to this death may just be the one responsible for turning John onto a new path.
Though this season has featured a self-contained, anthology-style approach to storytelling, the focus this episode isn't entirely on John. We see flashes of other peope who have been major players this season - Morgan, Strand, and Virginia's sister, Dakota (Zoe Colletti) - though what part they have to play in the next episode remains to be seen. The official synopsis for this episode, 'The Key', reads: "John is settling in as one of Virginia's rangers when a mysterious death sends him on an investigation that makes him question everything he thought about himself."
