'Brahmastra' Part 1: Release date, plot, cast, budget and all you need to know about Bollywood's fantasy movie

The producer of the movie Karan Johar was not planning to release the first part of the trilogy film on an OTT platform

Bollywood actors Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer 'Brahmastra' is one of the most talked about projects in the hindi movie industry. Chairman of Star and Disney India, Uday Shankar said, "It is the biggest-ever movie made in this country (India).” 

The report had also revealed that the producer of the movie Karan Johar was not thinking of releasing the first part of the trilogy film on an OTT platform. ''Producer Karan Johar, however, has not shown interest. He believes that the VFX heavy, grand film would be best enjoyed in cinemas," a source said.  

Release date

Part one of the trilogy film was officially announced to release on August 15, 2019, but later the release date was pushed to Christmas 2019 and later due to incomplete VFX work it was again pushed to summer 2020 and then finally pushed to December 4, 2020, but might get postponed again due to Covid-19. Earlier this year Alia Bhatt posted a video on Instagram captioning, “Soooooo.. this just happened! Brahmastra 04.12.2020.. promise.” 

Plot

The term Brahmastra was first used in one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India called ‘Mahabharata’ (the other being Ramayana). The Brahmastra and its variants, the Brahmashirsha Astra and the Brahmanda Astra were supernatural weapons used in the war of Mahabharata and are collectively called Brahma weapons. It is one of the most destructive, powerful and irresistible weapons mentioned in Hinduism. 

The story of the film revolves around the ultimate weapon of the gods that is unrivaled in power. A source informed Wion, “It’s an ancient weapon that has been broken and stored in the land of gods at multiple places in India. The first part of the trilogy revolves around Shiva’s discovery of fire within him and how that eventually leads him towards the weapon named Brahmastra.” 

Ranbir plays the character of Shiva who finds the fire within him to find this weapon, Alia plays the character of Isha who aids him in his adventurous journey.

Cast

Ranbir Kapoor (38) who plays the protagonist in the movie is one of the most celebrated Hindi film actors in India and is the recipient of six Filmfare awards, which is one of the most famous film events in India. Some of his hits include ‘Yeh Jawani hai Deewani’, ‘Rockstar’ and ‘Sanju’. 

Alia Bhatt (27) who plays his aide in the movie, is a Hindi movie actress and singer of Indian origin but with a British citizenship. She is one of the highest-paid actresses of India and as of 2019, her accolades include four Filmfare Awards. Some of her hits include ‘Student of the year’, ‘Raazi’ and ‘Highway’.

The movie also stars legendary Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan who was seen in a cameo on ‘The Great Gatsby’ opposite Leonardo Di Caprio, plays Shiva’s (Ranbir’s character) mentor and Telugu movie Nagarjuna plays an archaeologist who is restoring an ancient temple in Varanasi.

Budget

The star-studded movie's exact budget has not been revealed yet, but according to reports, the movie production budget has crossed the rupees 300 crores ($4 Billion) mark. Shankar was asked to shed some light about the movie budget and the news that the movie is being made on a budget of Rs 300 crores, however, he refused to share the exact numbers, he said, "Just to tell you, it is way more than that."
