While the show has seen a considerable change in the terms of format and editing, the newest one is the fact that fans at home can no longer vote for their favourite performances of the night. The voting process is now in the hands of the studio audience instead. The eliminations will thus be based on a combination of votes and the judges' critique. For long time fans of the show, this seemed like a dealbreaker, as it meant that they couldn't vote for their favourite performances, which caused them to question if the winner would truly be 'America's favourite dancer'.

"How can it be "americas favorite dancer" when only the studio audience gets to vote? Theyre seriously undermining everything good about this show #SYTYCD" tweeted a fan. "Might turn this off and watch something else… i have no reason to watch if I’m not voting lol. Part of the fun was voting! #sytycd" added another. "Did they really just say that the dancers on @DANCEonFOX will be voted on by the studio audience for America’s Fav Dancer Not America?!?! Doesn’t that make it “Those Who Can Fly To A Taping’s Favorite Dancer?!?!?” Oh & their families and friends? What are you doing #SYTYCD " added another. "So we’re not going to vote #SYTYCD" said a fan. "So... No Nigel. No Mary. No #SYTYCD theme song for commercial intros/outros. No choreo segments showing rehearsals/explaining the story behind the routine. Prize cut from $250K to $100K. And now viewers don't get to vote for "America's Favorite Dancer," just the studio audience?" added another.
