The series portrays a world devastated by a nuclear war. In this alternate history, advancements in nuclear technology post-WWII led to a retrofuturistic society and a resource war.

Survivors sought refuge in Vaults, underground bunkers built to preserve humanity.

Two hundred years later, a young woman (Ella Purnell), a descendant of the original "Vault Dwellers", leaves her sheltered life to brave the perilous wasteland of a ruined Los Angeles.

The official synopsis reads, "In a future, post-apocalyptic Los Angeles brought about by nuclear decimation, citizens must live in underground bunkers to protect themselves from radiation, mutants and bandits."
