CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: MGM+'s latest series 'Emperor of Ocean Park' opened with the death of Judge Oliver Garland in Episode 1, setting the stage for a thrilling viewing experience in the upcoming weeks.
The mystery series based on Stephen L Carter's novel of the same name features Forest Whitaker as Judge Oliver Garland, with a fair screen time as his story is explored in flashbacks.
The present timeline brings the spotlight on Judge's son Talcott Garland (Grantham Coleman) who is shattered by his death and finds embroiled in a complicated web of conspiracy and politics.
What happened in 'Emperor of Ocean Park' Episode 1?
'Emperor of Ocean Park' Episode 1 focuses on Judge's Garland's sudden death due to heart attack followed by how his children- Talcott, Mariah (Tiffany Mack) and Addison (Henry Simmons) navigate through the grief and funeral arrangements.
We get a flashback from the year 2007 when Judge was aiming to be Supreme Court Justice of the United States of America. During the nomination, there was a protest against him where people tried to throw ink at him and called him fascist. He was probably called out for his judgment that people saw as conservative and regressive.
He sat in front of the Senate where he was questioned about his controversial ruling in Alonso vs Secure-Tech case. He was also asked about his connections with Jack Ziegler (Torrey Hanson), a former CIA operative turned criminal.
Returning to present day, Mariah goes through the medical reports of his father from last five years which suggest that he was healthy. She believes that Judge might have been murdered and tells the same to her brothers who dismiss her theory.
By the end of the episode, the children gather for Judge's funeral where Talcott gets an unexpected visit from Jack asking about the arrangements, which Talcott says he knows nothing about.
What to expect in 'Emperor of Ocean Park' Episode 2?
In Episode 2 of 'Emperor of Ocean Park', we expect Mariah to follow through her initial suspicion. After meeting with Jack in Episode 1, Talcott will probably start believing Mariah's theory that their father's death may be somehow connected to Jack.
The upcoming episode will also shed further light on Judge's aspirations regarding his career and the challenges he faced.
