Emmys 2020: 'Succession' wins Outstanding Drama Series and presenter Sterling K Brown says, 'this is embarrassing'
'Succession' emerged as a dramatic winner at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards by bagging the award for Outstanding Drama Series. The award was presented by Sterling K Brown who joked that his series 'This is Us' was missing from the nominations and right before he announced the winner he said 'This is embarrassing." Although some might argue this could have been an almost diss of what is now trending on Twitter as the hashtag 'Emmyssowhite'
Barring lead actor and actress, 'Succession' bagged most of the wins in the drama category. The HBO series was nominated alongside 'Better Call Saul' (AMC), 'The Crown' (Netflix), 'The Handmaid’s Tale' (Hulu), 'Killing Eve' (BBC America/AMC), 'The Mandalorian' (Disney Plus), 'Ozark' (Netflix)
'Stranger Things' (Netflix), 'Succession' (HBO).
According to its official synopsis, "Succession follows the Roy family, owners of media conglomerate Waystar Royco. The family patriarch, Logan Roy (Cox), has experienced a decline in health. His four children – removed oldest son Connor (Ruck), power-hungry Kendall (Strong), irreverent Roman (Culkin), and politically savvy Siobhan (Snook) – all with varying degrees of connection to the company, begin to prepare for a future without their father,[10] and each begins vying for prominence within the company."
Series director Andrij Parekh also won the Emmy for Outstanding Director, thus helping make the series one of HBO's big wins at the 2020 Emmys. The network's other wins included the dystopian race-slash-superhero thriller 'Watchmen' and 'I Know This Much is True', which bagged the leading awards in the Limited Series category. The other big HBO win for the night was Zendaya's Leading Actress in a Drama Series for 'Euphoria'. This was the former Disney star's first nomination and some might argue that the Emmys was held this year purely to give the young actress her well-deserved win. As for 'Succession', the win has Brown salty enough to call his enthusiasm assuming the award was for his NBC show 'This is Us', 'embarrassing'.
The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and aired live on September 20, at 8 pm only on ABC.
