This review contains spoilers for 'Emergence' Episode 13: 'Killshot Pt. 2'

If anything, this could be Emergence's only season. For all the suspense it manages to build, there are a few storylines left unexplained. Before we get down to the verdict, here's a quick recap of the finale: The episode unravels at a rapid pace and picks up from the part where Jo Evans (Allison Tolman) and agent Ryan Brooks (Enver Gjokaj) attempt to get off the Plum Island facility with Helen (Rowena King) hot on their heels. Reinforcements arrive in the form of Piper (Alexa Swinton), Chris, Alex and Benny and they manage to find refuge in a biocontainment lab.

And as far as death counts go, Benny is a casualty despite the team's attempts to block Helen and then begins the much-teased about upload. Just when things look bleak, Jo uses the ability-tranquilizing bracelets on Helen and knocks her out. The blob-like substance that was teased in Episode 11 starts to swivel and swirl at a rapid pace and Piper deduces that an explosion because of the upload failure could decimate the city. Piper decides to use herself as a force field around the blob so the rest could be saved and it does look like the main character would be the one to go. There's enough sentiment at the point before she disintegrates.

While the team mourns, Jo, who has Piper's exabyte disk, uses it on an unconscious Helen, she turns into Piper. It's still confusing tech, but at least there is that bit of a happy ending that fans hoped for. It is in the final minutes of the show that there is still a major twist. Loretta (played by King again) and Michael Denman, The DoJ agent are shown to be the true villains as they're the people behind the upload. They search for Helen at the Plum Island facility and that's when Loretta pulls out a controller and tries to wake Helen up. The test does seem to work as Piper wakes up at Jo's house.

Verdict

It has been that sort of a sci-fi series where the pilot episode can hint the series will not go away anytime soon. This was an honest attempt in trying to bring in an AI-heavy storyline on the small screen and barring the minor flaws, 'Emergence' did come about as pretty impressive. Plus, the fact that it ended with something close to a cliffhanger, there was at least an idea to have a Season 2. Except, we don't know. Considering that ABC has canceled a few shows after a riveting pilot season, Emergence's fate remains unknown.

Season 2 makes sense. Not just does it mean the tying up of storylines, but it also means there's more scope of AI-based stories that we can witness. There's room for more character additions and the sprinkles of humor and love work well. The Brooks-Jo chemistry was well-received by the audience and that's just one of the instances where 'Emergence' has Twitter buzzing.

'Killshot Pt.2' may not have had the ending most people expected and probably for good reason. The time it took to establish the AI history, it probably hoped to explain the whole story over a couple of seasons and that's really okay.

What do fans say?

The decision is unanimous. They need a Season 2. "Seriously ABC, you lost my trust after we had to beg you to cancel Castle before you destroyed it, now you gotta give this good show a second season or I am 'nope'-ing out of future ABC endeavors," a fan tweeted. "Great episode! I really hope there's a Season 2! So many questions are unanswered! #renewemergence #Emergence," said another. "Patiently waiting for Season 2. I already have so many theories running through my mind," wrote another.

And here's a quick sum up from a fan: "I rarely watch any network TV but I've been hooked Emergence since Episode 1. It's a great show with an amazing cast. It better be back for season two or I will be back to having NO reason to watch network ABC. Allison Tolman is great & Alexa Swinton is an amazing young actress."
