'Emergence' Finale: Very few people saw the Benny twist coming; how will Jo deal with what happened?

This is one of the best winter finales of the season, and we cannot wait for the show to return with more answers and even more questions in 2020.

Major spoilers for 'Emergence' mid-season finale ahead

If you're like us, you've just finished watching the mid-season finale of 'Emergence' and have your jaw on the floor. The ABC show has managed to surprise us with a twist at every turn and just when you thought there really isn't a new way for them to surprise me, they do it again.

The mid-season finale of the show, titled 'Where You Belong' was a perfect example of that. The most recently aired episode of 'Emergence' saw the Evans family continuing to foster Piper (Alexa Swinton) and ensuring that she feels as at home as possible.

Over the episodes, everyone at home has come to realize that Piper is more than just an AI. She is a part of their family and they would do anything to protect her.

However, one after the other, a lot of people are chasing after her, who want to use her powers for their own benefits, and the latest in the long list happens to be the same woman that killed Alan (Seth Barrish) — Helen (Rowena King).

During the course of the episode, we saw Jo finally agreeing to work with the FBI and specifically agent Ryan Brooks (Enver Gjokaj) who has been chasing after the armed group of fixers headed by Helen.

When Jo and Ryan learn that Helen is after Piper, they decide to lure her and lock her behind bars with the help of Alex (Donald Faison), but their plan goes awry and Helen outsmarts them, even as Benny (Owain Yeoman) takes Piper away from the rest of the family claiming Jo asked to see her.

Later in the episode, we learn that Benny has in fact been working with Helen and believes, as she does, that Jo is not capable of nurturing Piper the way she deserves to be nurtured.

He seems to think that while Jo has been kind to Piper, she is incapable of understanding everything that Piper is. Finally, he reveals that he is also an AI, much like Helen.

Not many of us saw this coming, but Oh So Frieda certainly did. This is her tweet from September 25: "Watch this reporter guy Benny be exactly what Piper is or he'll turn out to be her 'Watcher' or something similar. #Emergence"

This is one of the best winter finales of the season, and we cannot wait for the show to return with more answers and even more questions in 2020.
