'Emergence Episode 4: Will Jo's fear of Piper stop her from protecting the girl who was created in a lab?

The looming questions at this point for Jo are whether she is going to protect her or keep her at arm's distance and be afraid of her.

From the moment that Jo (Allison Tolman) met Piper (Alexa Swinton), the police chief has known that she is special, but nothing could have prepared her for what she found out in the previously aired Season 1 Episode 3 of 'Emergence'. The ABC show pulled an uber-modern 'Jurassic Park', and showed Jo and Benny (Owain Yeoman ) being chased out of a secret scientific facility by mechanical dogs even as they come to the realization that the girl they are risking their lives to protect may not be a girl at all.

Piper, as we learned in the '2 MG CU BID', was built to self-destruct, but thanks to Jo's efforts, she is still alive - so to speak - but we do not know how much longer Jo would feel comfortable protecting her. Jo already knows that Piper has superhuman powers, and decided to protect her and keep her out of the systems anyway, but this revelation has her questioning this decision.

In the trailer for the upcoming Episode 4 titled 'No Outlet', we hear Jo's voice-over saying, "How much of her is programming and how much of her is real?" Further asking, "I need to know who is sleeping in my house." The looming questions at this point for Jo are whether she is going to protect her or keep her at arm's distance and be afraid of her. We know for a fact that Piper looks to Jo as a mother figure, and it will certainly hurt her little robot heart to know that the doubts she is having, but our best guess is that Jo will find a way to still love Piper.

After all, Piper is every bit like a human girl, in her behavior and mannerisms, and it certainly seems like she craves love and attention just like every other little girl. Whether she was made in a factory or not, and whether or not she is capable of physically harming people, she is deserving of love, and Jo is smart and sensitive enough to see that. However, we suspect that Episode 4, which will air on Tuesday, October 15, on ABC, will see Jo contemplating the choices she has with Piper.
