'El Presidente': Release date, plot, cast, trailer and all you need to know about Amazon Prime series based on 2015 FIFA scandal

As the world slowly inches towards normalcy after being ravaged by the pandemic, one thing sports fans can look forward to is the resumption of sporting activities across the world. But while they wait, TV channels and streaming networks have ensured they have something to watch while they wait for their favorite sports to hit the ground. One of them is 'El Presidente', an Amazon Prime Original miniseries. 'El Presidente' is a comedy-drama series based on the corruption scandal that rocked FIFA and CONMEBOL, its regional organization, in 2015. The aftermath saw Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini, the two biggest names, lose their jobs as the presidents of FIFA and UEFA respectively. Here's what we know about the series so far.

'El Presidente' will drop on Amazon Prime on Friday, June 5. 

Plot

The eight-episode series tells the story of Sergio Jadue (Andrés Parra), a  small-time Chilean football club president who goes onto become the head honcho of the country's football association and one of the integral personas in a $150M bribery conspiracy case. According to Pablo Iacoviello, head of Latin America Content Acquisition, Amazon Prime Video, "El Presidente presents a story filled with corruption and lies around one of the biggest religions in Latin America: soccer."

Director/Writer

Academy Award-winning director and screenwriter,  Armando Bo ('Birdman) will helm the series and serve as the executive producer. According to Deadline, 'El Presidente' is produced by Oscar‐winning director Pablo Larrain’s production company Fabula.
