'El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie': Could Walter White make a comeback in Netflix sequel?
It's been official for a while that the sequel to AMC's hit drama, 'Breaking Bad', titled 'El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie' is arriving and pretty soon too. With the plot following the life of Aaron Paul's high-school-dropout-turned-meth-cook character, Jesse Pinkman, after he escapes from captivity at the end of the show's finale, it is expected that 'El Camino' will focus on the police trying to find out where exactly Jesse's been hiding. But something else about the show also has our curiosity and excitement piqued, and that is all about which characters from the original show may return in the sequel!
Walter White
Of course, no 'Breaking Bad' can be complete without Bryan Cranston's high-school chemistry teacher turned infamous drug czar. Street name Heisenberg, Walter was last seen helping Jesse flee from his captors by decimating those who were holding him captive. Jesse sped from the scene and the series ended with Walter lying on the floor of the lab, bleeding out as he loses consciousness. The final scene, no matter how satisfying and cathartic, isn't definitive in terms of whether Walter is dead; so it's quite possible that maybe somehow he is alive. And since the plot of the film revolves around the chase for Jesse there has to be some connection to Walter somewhere, right? And as much as we would like to see Jesse's character evolve without Walter hovering over him, there's no denying how much the two complement each other. It's like a package deal.
Saul Goodman
Bob Odenkirk's lawyer with questionable morals shot to such immense popularity when he was introduced on the show that AMC decided to pursue a spin-off 'Better Call Saul' based solely on his character. Running successfully for four years now there's no reason why we shouldn't see Saul Goodman pop by at some point on 'El Camino'. Maybe as legal aid for Jesse when he is finally tracked down by the police? That prospective plot sounds like a good enough idea for the holy trinity of Saul, Walter, and Jesse to reunite as well!
Skyler White
In the finale, we saw Skyler (Anna Gunn) left behind by Walt to raise their two children in a small apartment, while she works as a taxi dispatcher, going by her maiden name to hide the infamy her husband's truth splattered on their lives. Even if it turns out that Walter didn't survive the gunshot wound, it's possible that Jesse reaches out to Skyler, or the authorities contact her as they are on the lookout for Jesse. So far we have seen her as the paranoid, righteous, and somewhat nagging wife of Heisenberg who always tried getting in his way to do the right thing. Watching her in a light of her own, perhaps carrying Walter's legacy forward will be a treat!
Marie Schrader
Granted she was just the annoying wife's even more annoying sister, but Marie's (Betsy Brandt) darkness was a subject left unexplored in 'Breaking Bad'. We did not get to see the kleptomaniac mourning for her husband, nor do we find out the extent she is capable of going to to unravel the mystery surrounding her husband Hank's (Dean Norris) death. It's possible that Marie could be back with a vendetta in Jesse's story helping the police in whatever way possible to track Walter's former partner down because that would be the only time she could actually avenge her husband's death after Walter let him die and buried his body in the desert.
Walt Jr./Flynn
Walter is survived by his ex-wife an two kids -- a differently-abled son and a daughter who is still a baby. The high-school-going son, Walt Jr./Flynn, got closure in the penultimate episode of the series, 'Granite State', by screaming at his dad on the phone, denying his blood money, and asking him to die. Considering the plot of 'El Camino' doesn't take place all that far in the future, it's possible that once Walt Jr. turns 18 and receives the millions left behind by his drug kingpin father, something clicks and he feels the need to keep his legacy alive? It's possible that he might team up with Jesse to finish or continue what Walter started, thus reinstating the White/Pinkman dynamic of the plot in case Walter's death turns out to be final.
'El Camino: The Breaking Bad Movie' premieres on Netflix on October 11 nationwide.
