There is a term called the seven-year curse in K-pop and it seems like girl group April has fallen prey to it as their label DSP Media announced that the group will be disbanding. On January 28, DSP Media announced that April will be disbanding. In their statement, the label said that the members have made the difficult decision to part ways from the label as well as the group and go their separate ways.

April made their debut in May of 2015 and much like all other K-pop groups, April too signed a seven-year contract with their label DSP Media. With their contracts expiring in 2022, members of April decided against renewing their contracts for another year and announced their group disbandment.

April disbands in 2022

DSP Media revealed their official position in a statement that was released. The label stated that after engaging in a long discussion with the girl group they are now announcing that the final consensus of the April members was to disband. They also said, “The members have decided to disband the team and go their separate ways.” DSP media asked for fans to support the six members of April as well as to take interest in their future endeavors.

The label said that the members of the group have decided to take on new paths other than just being members of April. The label ended its statement with thank you to fans who have supported the group over the last seven years. In addition, thank you once again to the fans who have supported and cheered for April over the past 6 years.

April over the years

The girl group debuted in August of 2015 as six members with the April, who debuted in August 2015 with the mini-album, ‘Dreaming’. The girl group had many lineup changes since their debut with Somin of Kard departing from the group soon after its debut and Hyunjoo initially leaving the group to pursue her acting career which was later revealed as a bullying controversy where she was allegedly bullied by other members of the group.

The group was joined by Chaekyung and Rachel with the final lineup of April being six members namely, Chaekyung, Chaewon, Naeun, Yena, Rachel and Jinsol as they last released their July comeback, ‘Hello Summer’ with the lead single ‘Now or Never’. Fans who heard of the news of disbandment expressed their shock after the girl group decided to disband only a day after it was revealed that DSP Media will be acquired by RBW Entertainment.

'DSP, you gave up on April'

Fans are not particularly happy about this announcement as they claim that the label did not defend the members against Hyunjoo’s allegations as one fan said, “April has officially disbanded. now, i just hope that everything hyunjoo did to them will get back to her.” Another fan said, “So uh April just disbanded even tho they were proven innocent like I knew this would happen but god damn.”

One more fan said, “@official_DSP not only you gave up on april but also you let us (fineapples) down, these girl repeatedly and proudly said they want and love april and fought for that name but just like that u disbanded a group they builded with their bl*od, sweat and tears. F*ck u and RBW.” One fan critiqued the label saying, “No! i will not support any of your artist anymore.”

Another fan said, “You kidding? Instead of defending your idols u disband them?” And one other fan said, “All these years just for this to happen. Rest in pieces, DSP.” One more fan said, “This comes after RBW's acquisition news. DSP pursued the case, but the new masters don't want to assume the responsibility, so that's that.” One fan claimed that April may have lost the case against Hyunjoo and another responded, “We’ll never know plus their contracts are supposed to end this year so i guess they chose not to renew it?”
