‘Heated Rivalry’ finale gives Shane and Ilya what fans hoped for and perfectly sets up season 2
Even after it recently aired its season one finale episode titled 'The Cottage', Crave's 'Heated Rivalry' is still making headlines. The Rachel Reid adaptation is created by Jacob Tierney, who also serves as the showrunner. While the debut season of the show, which found international distribution on HBO Max, mostly toed the line of faithful adaptation throughout, the sixth and final episode featured a few key changes that complemented the overall character arcs. Most notably, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov finally found solace in each other's embrace, subsequently planning for a future that involved them potentially being together.
The title of the finale derives from Shane's invitation to Ilya to spend the summer together at the former's family home by the lake in Ottawa, according to ScreenRant. The finale, throughout its fifty-one minutes of duration, gave expression to the much-anticipated lovers' union. As Shane and Ilya relished each other's touch, they became oblivious to the outside world, which still saw them as bitter rivals in the game. At that moment, frozen in time, Ilya and Shane weren't touched by any societal misgivings.
Their moment of union, nevertheless, led both the superstar athletes to acknowledge that they wouldn't be able to go back to their previous life of sneaking glances at each other while being mutually hostile in public. When Ilya revealed contemplating marriage with Svetlana and giving up his Russian passport to become an American citizen, Shane requested him to reconsider. The reason why Shane felt so confident was that by then, he had worked out a plan to make sure that the two of them could be together. Ilya would first have to leave the Boston Raiders and join the Ottawa Centaurs in his stint as a free agent. This would reduce the physical distance between them.
Moreover, Shane also proposed that the two of them should establish a joint charitable trust to reform the image of their rivalry. As Ilya agreed to the said plan, both of the leading characters basked in the optimism of knowing that, given enough time, the two of them could finally make their relationship work. Whenever they do announce their relationship in the future, they will be prepared to face the consequences. Furthermore, Shane came out to his parents, David and Yune, soon after, telling them all about Ilya and their romance, which began way back during the rookie season.
'Heated Rivalry' has already been renewed for a sophomore season and will be adapting the Reid novel 'The Long Game', the storyline of which picks up after a significant gap and begins with Ilya already playing with the Centaurs. In the absence of a potential release date, it remains to be seen whether Tierney would stick to the layout of the source novels or bring in his own creative prowess. All episodes of 'Heated Rivalry' are available on HBO Max.
