HBO confirms ‘Heated Rivalry’ Season 2 as cast teases ‘hotter’ sequel plans and drops spinoff hints
Fans of swoony sports romances can officially relax: ‘Heated Rivalry’ is coming back for a second season. HBO Max has confirmed that the steamy hockey drama will continue beyond its debut run. This ensures that the love story between Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov is far from over. ‘Heated Rivalry’ is based on Rachel Reid’s wildly popular ‘Game Changers’ book series. Viewers barely had time to process the first few episodes before HBO Max stepped in with renewal news. Unlike many streaming shows that wait until a full season has aired before greenlighting another chapter, ‘Heated Rivalry’ earned its renewal after just four episodes were released.
The early decision makes sense: the series climbed to the number two spot on HBO Max’s streaming rankings after only three episodes. The announcement itself leaned into the show’s playful energy. On December 11, stars Connor Storrie (Ilya) and Hudson Williams (Shane) revealed the news through a cheeky Instagram video. In the clip, the actors unwrap a gift to find a hockey puck inside, emblazoned with the words confirming season two. Williams summed it up perfectly with a teasing promise that the next season will be “hotter, wetter, longer.” Season one of ‘Heated Rivalry’ is relatively short, consisting of six episodes.
The finale is set to drop on December 26. While HBO Max has not yet confirmed the episode count for season two, Williams’ comment about a “longer” season suggests that the show could expand beyond its current format. Importantly, season two will continue to focus squarely on Shane and Ilya. In Rachel Reid’s novels, ‘Heated Rivalry’ centers on the pair’s fiery, years-long relationship, while later books in the ‘Game Changers’ series shift attention to other couples. Creator Jacob Tierney has made it clear that the television version will stay with Shane and Ilya for the foreseeable future.
“We’re following Shane and Ilya. That’s not gonna be a shock,” Tierney previously told Entertainment Weekly. That doesn’t mean other ‘Game Changers’ couples are being left behind entirely. Episode three introduced fan-favorite pair Scott Hunter and Kip Grady, played by François Arnaud and Robbie G.K. Their brief but impactful storyline, spanning secret romance, heartbreak, and eventual public reconciliation, left plenty of unanswered questions. Episode five jumped ahead several years, showing Scott coming out publicly by kissing Kip after winning the Stanley Cup.
Arnaud has hinted that Scott and Kip could resurface in future episodes, though nothing has been officially confirmed. He has also revealed that producers previously discussed the idea of a spin-off. As quoted by Glamour, “I have no idea what my involvement with it is. I’m sure we’ll see more of Scott and Kip,” he revealed. “I heard, like, months ago, before the show even came out, that the producers were interested in a potential spin-off, so who knows? I don’t know if it’s now. I don’t know if it’s season two. I don’t know if it’s season three.”
