'DL Hughley Uncut': Jamie Foxx, Killer Mike and Kirk Franklin talk Trump's photo-op and celebrate blackness
Comedy legend DL Hughley's new episode of his conversation series 'DL Uncut' welcomed rapper, activist and entrepreneur Killer Mike, Academy award-winning actor and comedian Jamie Foxx, and Grammy-award winning gospel star Kirk Franklin in a special edition that discussed the ongoing protests against police brutality and racial violence in addition to sharing messages of justice, unity and action.
DL Uncut airs via Laugh Out Loud Network, a multi-platform comedy brand founded by comedian Kevin Hart. The show features Hughley's brand of honest comedic commentary and assesses everything from politics to pop culture besides featuring insightful inputs of co-host Jasmine Sanders and an array of guest stars. In the latest episode, Hughley and Sanders grapple with the ongoing protests following George Floyd's death and how the incident opened up the conversation around police brutality, political leadership and social reform.
In a chat with Killer Mike, Hughley pointed out how violent protests are often the impetus for change, highlighting that as unfortunate as it was, governments, corporations and the larger public only respond when they "hear noise". Hughley additionally shared another powerful statement: "Peaceful protests don't make people uncomfortable enough to make change... America will never answer to you if you whisper," before sharing a laugh with Mike over large corporations that were dealing with stores being looted amid protests.
Jamie Foxx, in a separate segment, touched on the importance of embracing and celebrating blackness throughout his film career. "We struggle to get to a certain point in our lives where they've told us to be mainstream... but if my black fans are not proud of what I'm doing then somehow it doesn't feel the same." As more black artists begin to celebrate their blackness and highlight their unique experiences and struggles via their artistry, including Beyoncé, it becomes increasingly apparent that black entertainment is recognizing the importance of catering to their black audience.
Kirk Franklin also took a moment to share his thoughts on President Donald Trump's Bible photo-op, stating, "The same Bible held reads Psalms 119 that says 'Hide thy word in thy heart' not hold my word in thy hand. So just because you hold it doesn't mean you're in it." After harsh criticism for retreating to his bunker as ongoing protests engulf the nation, Trump decided to smooth things over through prayer. Unfortunately, this gesture included having his entourage tear-gas and shoot rubber bullets at peaceful protesters to clear the president's path till the church, in addition to holding the Bible upside down while he delivered his speech.
