'There's no original thought': 'Black Mirror' creator Charlie Brooker axed Season 6 episode plot due to 's**t' results from ChatGPT
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'Black Mirror' Season 6 returns to Netflix after a hiatus of four long years, and this time they are back with something new and exciting. Not only the creators have suggested the existence of alternate timelines in the upcoming season, but they have also hinted towards venturing into old-school horror as well.
With the cast of the newest season already making waves, the creator, Charlie Brooker, addressed the elephant in the room by bringing up Artificial Intelligence and its use in being able to write scripts. While the use of AI has recently caused an uproar and is one of the issues raised by the writer's strike, Brooker's attempt to try and write an episode using ChatGPT is what has garnered much attention.
Was there supposed to be a sixth episode?
With Season 6 dropping in June and consisting of five storylines, there is apparently one story that has been left out by the creator of the hit Netflix series. In a recent interview, Brooker claimed that he considered using an AI-related story plot but eventually decided against including it in the show. He was not satisfied with the outcome and referred to the end results as 's**t', as per The Sun.
He said, "The first thing I did was type 'generate Black Mirror episode'. It [came] up with something that, at first glance, reads plausibly, but on second glance, is s**t." Brooker said that all that ChatGPT did was look up the summaries of each and every episode and managed to combine them together. There is barely any form of originality involved and he also suggested that one has to take more than one look to understand the flaws in the final outcomes. He said, “All it's done is look up all the synopses of Black Mirror episodes, and sort of mush them together. Then if you dig a bit more deeply you go, 'Oh, there's not actually any real original thought here.'"
The hype around Season 6
'Black Mirror' Season 6 has been hyped up exponentially not only because of its return after a long time but also because of the star cast involved. Season 6 of the show has managed to bag in A-listers such as Salma Hayek, Aaron Paul, Kate Mara, Annie Murphy, and more.
Even though Brooker axed the sixth episode and decided to keep only five episodes, each of them has something new and unique to offer. Each episode has an interesting premise referring to alternate universes, space stories, paparazzi, horror, and an episode where Netflix is seemed to be parodying itself. 'Black Mirror' Season 6 starts streaming on June 16, 2023, on Netflix.
