'Diary of a Future President' follows the journey of Elena and how her life's many experiences helped her rise to a position of power. On the surface, she is an innocent middle-schooler who is still figuring why her best friend, Jessica, won't talk to her. But life has a funny way of challenging people's happiness.

One afternoon, she bumps into Sam, her mother Gabrielle's boyfriend, at her house. Unable to process the information, she went to her room. Unsure what to feel about the whole situation, Elena sprung a bunch of questions on her mother, trying to understand what Sam was all about.

Over a montage sequence, we see Elena grow comfortable with Sam's company in the house until one day when she was unceremoniously removed from her position as the 'sink whisperer.' The kitchen sink has been wonky with a leaking tap that only Elena could fix with a few taps (and would take a lot of pride in doing it every time) until the day Sam fixed it once for all and earned himself the title of the 'sink whisperer.' The episode bothered her so much she ended up discussing it with her friends.

As if this wasn't enough, Sam had finished serving scrambled eggs to everyone when Elena arrived with a box of doughnuts. Her brother Bobby had his tennis try-outs the same day, which prompted Elena to ask if he didn't (while advancing the doughnuts) need any carbohydrates to survive his matches. Bobby completely declined her offer and asked Sam if he could have another serving of his scrambled eggs. This ticked Elena off completely.

Next evening, she came back to Sam and Gabrielle watching the TV and discussing literature questions. Upset and dejected, Elena left the house on her cycle and arrived at the doughnut drive-through, where, while talking to the server at the other end of the window, she felt as though her father called out to her and she poured her heart about what was going on in her life. Soon after Gabrielle arrived and took her in an embrace. They sat in her and discussed how Elena was grieving a lot - she lost her best friend Jessica to another person, lost her father, lost her presence in the family.

Gabrielle made her understand that it was okay to feel grief and that it can happen whenever one goes through changes.
