Spoilers for 'DC's Legends of Tomorrow' Season 5 Episode 15 'Swan Thong' (Season Finale)

'DC's Legends of Tomorrow' Season 5 has finally wrapped up with the kickass finale episode 'Swan Thong' but even as we celebrate a great season, it's time to say goodbye to some beloved characters. Brandon Routh's Ray Palmer/Atom and Courtney Ford's Nora Darhk exited the series early on in the season and now at least two others have followed suit. Season 5 gave us a lot of insight into Charlie (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) so we're kind of bummed out that she is one of the characters leaving the show now. But according to series executive producer Phil Klemmer, this exit was planned way ahead of time and Maisie's going to be moving on to bigger and better things.

“This was something that was well over a year in the works,” co-showrunner Phil Klemmer tells TVLine. “We knew that [Maisie] was wanting to make her mark as a filmmaker on her own, and so that allowed us to craft a story that would, hopefully, make for a satisfying conclusion. The finale was sort of all about her. For me, it’s so bittersweet, bringing it back to that punk club and The Smell… The good thing is that people are allowed to come back and have come back.” Besides Charlie, Zari 1.0 (Tala Ashe) also bid goodbye to the team, though Zari 2.0 (also Tala Ashe) will still be around. Astra Logue (Olivia Swann) also seems to be exiting the show or at least moving to a more recurring role, and the fans are pretty sad about the whole thing.

"Losing Charlie and OG Zari the same episode sucks a**," one fan wrote on the episode's discussion page over on Reddit. "Charlie had a really long and fulfilling character arc with a pretty chill ending, now she's back to being the singer of a punk band right where she started. Which is kind of fitting for a Fate," another fan wrote. "She spent all this time trying to change stuff and yet she wound up right back where this whole adventure started which was ironically...precisely where she was supposed to or...fated...to be all along. For me at least, that feels really really good and not at all like the abortion that was Ray and Nora's exit."

"I will so miss OG Zari. I may have hated Zari/Nate, but I think the actors sold the heartbreak well in this episode. But they left her ending open enough where she'll likely come back at some point, so that's good," another fan commented. "But I am surprised with Charlie and possibly Astra also leaving. I didn't expect three characters to depart!" Yet another fan who's still a bit hopeful wrote, "I’m really upset about losing Charlie and especially OG Zari (again), but at least they didn’t kill them off or erase them from existence. Maisie could come back as long as she’s not busy, and they already have Tala there so they could bring Zari back whenever; they better figure out a way to bring OG Zari back for real tho 😭"

'DC's Legends of Tomorrow' Season 5 aired its finale on June 2, 9 pm ET on The CW.
