'Legends of Tomorrow': Is Zari the key to resolving the Loom of Fate's story arc?

Zari is unique among the Legends for how time travel has affected her life, and she might be the best person to control the Loom of Fate

After a long break caused by halted production due to the coronavirus outbreak, 'DC's Legends of Tomorrow' will be returning with 'Zari, Not Zari.' While the promos and synopsis of the episode seem to focus more on John Constantine (Matthew Ryan), Charlie (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) and Sara Lance (Caity Lotz), the episode's title suggests that Zari Tarazi (Tala Ashe) will have a central role to play. The question is, with her resurrected brother in possession of her powers, and her own memories far from restored, what purpose that Zari truly have on board the Waverider? Could the show be prepping her for something more than just being the team's social expert?

As the first episode makes clear, the Legends do not need a social media manager. They've had their time in the spotlight, and they want nothing to do with it. So what does Zari really bring to the team? The answer perhaps lies in the fact that, aside from certain speedsters on other shows, nobody's life has been affected more than Zari's by the idiosyncrasies of the timestream.

Forget the fact that her entire history has been rewritten after she resurrected her brother. Even before that, she had spent a long time on board the Waverider as a time traveler. While that's true for all the Legends, Zara is also the only one on board who has been subject to a time loop, as seen in Season 3's 'Here I Go Again.' She is the only person on the ship, then, who is a long term time traveler, whose personal timeline has been radically altered, and who has been subject to additional time inconsistencies in the time loop.

Zari may, therefore, be more connected to the timestream than even Sara, the Paragon of Destiny herself. Zari's memories are trying to return to her from an alternate timeline. When her memories are restored, Zari is going to have a difficult choice to make, as there are two versions of herself she could choose to accept. However, that choice gives her more control over her own Fate than most people ever get. In that control, Zari might just be the one person most suited to handle the Loom of Fate whenever Charlie and Constantine reconstruct it.

Zari's connection to time, and her double pasts, are possibly the reasons that keep her on the Waverider for the foreseeable future. While her story and Constantine's have not yet intersected, the Loom of Fate appears to be central to this season's arc. One way or another, Zari's storyline is going to intersect with the Loom, and she might be the one person in all the multiverse best able to decide its Fate.

The next episode of 'DC's Legends of Tomorrow' airs April 21, on the CW.
