This review contains spoilers for 'Chicago PD' Season 7 Episode 13 'I Was Here'

This week's episode would have been a tough one to watch for most. 'Chicago PD' on NBC is known for its realism but for many viewers, the 13th episode of the seventh season might have proven to be too real.

The episode starts out with a cute scene between Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek, who are moving in together in preparation for their baby's arrival. But this is the only moderate moment viewers get.

Kim Burgess is now on desk duty and she is tasked with answering 911 calls. For the most part, it seems like easy work until Kim gets a call from a young girl asking for her help. Officers respond but when Kim follows up with them, they say they did not see anything wrong.

Kim goes to check the situation herself at the address with Sgt Trudy Platt accompanying her. When they arrive at the flat, however, they see a mess — blood and urine in the bathroom — but what confirms Kim's suspicion that everything is not okay is when they discover a body in the elevator.

Further investigation into what happened leads the Intelligence Unit to realize that there is a sex trafficking ring in play. When the team looks up one of the faces caught on surveillance video, they see that he is wanted in multiple states. Soon, the FBI is called in and they share their previous information with the Intelligence Unit.

While the rest of the Intelligence Unit does the groundwork, Kim keeps monitoring the situation. It's clear that she wants to give her all but this is all she can do at the moment. She is able to do more when the team arrests a previous trafficking victim.

Though the victim is reluctant to share information with the team — as she doesn't want to recall what she went through — Kim is able to get through to her. This leads to a massive raid of the ring's hub that the Intelligence Unit tracked down.

Unfortunately, the girl who called Kim is not present among the girls who were rescued during the raid. When a call comes through to Kim from dispatch, Kim realizes that the girl is still on the line and heads to her direction.

When her team does not show up on time and she realizes that the girl is in danger, Kim rushes in to save her. However, the culprit overpowers her and a violent fight follows, with the culprit repeatedly punching Kim's stomach and banging her head against the wall.

Kim is badly beaten up but she is able to regain access to her gun and shoots him. Kim is clearly in pain, but the first thing she does is ensure that the girl is okay. When Detective Hailey Upton rushes in, she calls for an ambulance immediately. Ruzek immediately goes to Kim and takes her out of the room.

In the final harrowing moments, as the Intelligence Unit waits in the hospital to hear about Kim, she receives the news that she has lost her pregnancy, something that may have been clear to viewers following the brutality of the attack on her.

What awaits for Kim and Ruzek in the future is anyone's guess, but Ruzek could step up and be there for Kim when she needs it. It is possible that Brian Geraghty's return as Sean Roman in the upcoming crossover with 'Chicago Fire' on February 26 could complicate things further.

Marina Squerciati did a brilliant job of portraying Kim's strengths and vulnerabilities in this episode. Squerciati is clearly the MVP this week and for good reason.

'Chicago PD' airs on NBC on Wednesday nights at 10/9c.
