'Chicago PD' Season 7 Finale Preview: Kevin Atwater takes the limelight as another cop is shot dead

'Chicago PD' doesn't have a great track record of telling stories of the African-American community, but by focusing more on Atwater, it is giving itself the chance to do so

The current seasons of all three 'Chicago' shows have been shortened due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. As such, this week's episodes will be the final episodes for the respective seasons of each show. Neither of the episodes were written as season finales, however, and it may feel different for Chihards watching from home.

This week's episode of 'Chicago PD' places the focus on Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins). 'Chicago PD' doesn't have a great track record of telling stories of the African-American community, but by focusing more on Atwater, it is giving itself the chance to do so.

The synopsis for this week's episode says, "Atwater goes undercover to take down a gun trafficking ring but discovers an officer from his past is undercover in the same organization." We have slowly been learning about Atwater's personal past, especially about him taking care of his younger siblings. But this would be the first time 'Chicago PD' delves into his professional past.

The unfortunate thing is that the other officer could be someone Atwater has an unresolved issue with and it potentially has to do with the officer's racism. Of all the members of the Intelligence Squad, Atwater is usually the most level-headed and decent officer. However, this other officer could mean we see a different side of Atwater this time around.

The promo for the episode shows that a cop was gunned down, although whether it was murder or done in self-defense is yet to be known. Atwater tells Voight that he "can't just sit on this," that he ought to "say something." Voight tells him, "If what you're saying is true, we got a big problem."

Whatever happens next could shake up the department. Even though this episode was not written as a season finale, it could very well feel like it was. It may even end up making a bigger impact on the stories of the characters than it may have previously.

The Season 7 finale for 'Chicago PD' will air this Wednesday at 10/9c on NBC.
