'Chicago Med' Season 6: Release date, plot, cast and all you need to know about NBC's medical drama
Earlier this year, all three 'Chicago' shows had to end their seasons a couple of episodes short because production was shut down owing to lockdown restrictions imposed in the aftermath of the coronavirus outbreak. This meant that 'Chicago Med', which usually likes to end each season with a bang of a cliffhanger, ended its fifth season on a quieter note.
However, before the seasons ended, NBC had announced that each of the three 'Chicago' franchise shows would be renewed for three seasons each and this meant that there wouldn't be any anxiety regarding anticipation on whether fans' favorite 'Chicago' show was coming back.
Of the three 'Chicago' shows, 'Chicago Med' is undoubtedly the weakest — that could be because it is the newest of the lot, but given that the show has been around for five seasons now, it should have found its footing already. However, with a new season comes new opportunities. Read on to know more about the upcoming season.
Release date
'Chicago Med' Season 5 will premiere on NBC on Wednesday, November 11. Going by previous schedules, 'Chicago Med' will air at 9/8c.
Plot
The fifth season of 'Chicago Med' was by far the show's weakest. Rather than focusing on interesting medical cases and dilemmas, 'Chicago Med' went more into the multiple romantic dramas between characters, a trend that had been continuing from the previous season but only seemed to get worse. Some characters started out with interesting arcs, only for those to take a sideline to their romantic interests.
There are three characters in particular that this involved: Will Halstead, Maggie Lockwood and April Sexton. All three had interesting storylines that if developed properly would have led to great character growth — like Will's illegal injection site work, Maggie's cancer and April's promotion. Unfortunately, all three had their stories devolve into nothing more than petulant and childish dramas, especially April's ill-thought-out love triangle with Ethan Choi and Crockett Marcel.
Speaking of Crockett, this character was introduced after the exit of the fan-favorite and original character, Connor Rhodes. Crockett may not have been meant to replace Connor, but, he ended up being compared a lot to him anyway, and he held up badly. In 20 episodes, we barely learned anything about him because the show focused first on his attraction to April, and then to Natalie Manning.
Nevertheless, the new season will likely develop a relationship between Natalie and Crockett which had been hinted at in the latter half of the previous season. Meanwhile, April and Ethan might get back together. Will was going steady with his latest paramour, Hannah Asher, so we will have to wait and see how that turns out.
