'Black-ish' Season 7: Meet Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross and rest of the cast of returning ABC sitcom
As we move closer to the end of the year, many networks have started to resume their normal fall schedules, albeit a bit late. Among the shows that are set to resume their runs after an extended break due to the coronavirus pandemic is ABC's award-winning sitcom, 'Blackish', which follows the Andersons, an upper-middle-class Black family who live in a predominantly white neighborhood.
Now entering its seventh season, the Kenya Barris sitcom has resulted in two successful spinoffs — 'Grown-ish' starring Yara Shahidi as Zoey Johnson and 'Mixedish' on Anderson matriarch Rainbow's (Tracee Ellis Ross) growing up in a mixed family in the 1980s.
Over the last six seasons, 'Blackish' has garnered a fair amount of acclaim and praise for its treatment of issues surrounding race, police brutality and others. With its new season, we expect 'Blackish' to continue doing so. Before its seventh season premiere, a two-parter special aired on October 4, both directed by Academy Award-winning Matthew A Cherry ('Hair Love'). Both were election-themed and focused on voting and other issues with one episode entirely animated.
The seventh season will premiere soon and while the cast has largely remained the same since the beginning, there are some key differences. Read on to know who will be starring in the upcoming seventh season and the characters they will be playing.
Anthony Anderson
Anthony Anderson is an actor, comedian, writer and game show host. He is known for his roles in 'Me, Myself & Irene', 'Law & Order', 'The Shield' and 'The Departed'. In 'Blackish', Anderson plays Andre "Dre" Johnson Sr, a wealthy advertising executive at Stevens & Lido who wishes to ensure a balance of black culture is intertwined with his family's ultra-suburban upbringing.
Tracee Ellis Ross
Tracee Ellis Ross is an actress, singer and television host. She is known for her roles in 'Girlfriends', 'Hanging Up', 'Reed Between the Lines' and 'Daddy's Little Girls'. She plays the role of Dre's wife, Dr Rainbow "Bow" Johnson, an anesthesiologist who wishes to remain important and relevant to her children as they grow up. She comes from a biracial family where her father is white and her mother is African-American.
Marcus Scribner
Marcus Scribner is an actor best known for his roles in 'She-Ra and the Princesses of Power' and 'Blackish'. In 'Blackish', he plays the role of Dre's son, Andre "Junior" Johnson Jr. Junior is the self-proclaimed "nerdy" first child. He typically lacks teenage savvy and is taught these things, albeit with a hint of disdain, by his relatively shallow and self-aggrandizing father and siblings.
Anna Deavere Smith
Anna Deavere Smith is an actress, playwright, and professor. She is known for her work in 'The West Wing', 'Nurse Jackie', and 'Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992'. She plays the role of Rainbow's widowed mother, Alicia Johnson.
Miles Brown
Miles Brown is an actor and dancer best known for his work in 'Blackish', 'Drunk History' and 'Dancing with the Stars: Juniors'. He plays the role of Dre's second son, Jack Johnson. Jack is 13-years-old and typically aloof, but also idolizes his father, and is Diane's older twin brother.
Marsai Martin
Marsai Martin is an actress and executive producer best known for her work in 'Blackish', 'Little', and 'An American Girl Story – Melody 1963: Love Has to Win'. She plays the role of Jack's fraternal twin sister, Diane Johnson who considers herself smarter and more mature than him.
'Blackish' Season 7 will premiere on ABC on Wednesday, October 21, at 9:30 pm EST.
