Who is the founder of Big Mouth Toothbrush?
Dr Bobbi Peterson has made history by becoming the first Black woman to create an electric toothbrush. Dr Bobbi, a native of Newark, New Jersey, followed in her father's footsteps by enrolling in Howard University and is a second-generation dentist with HBCU training. As the daughter of a dentist and nurse educator, health was a frequent topic of discussion, particularly in relation to oral hygiene. As the current owner of Aces Braces in Brooklyn, Dr Bobbi works extra hard to promote the importance of oral health care for her own patients.
After serving as a brand ambassador for a Black-owned manual toothbrush firm for a time, Peterson decided she needed to start her own business to truly challenge stereotypes regarding who might produce goods in this industry. After consulting with her family, she went with the name “Big Mouth,” as a nod to her childhood nickname "Mighty Mouth" and her family culture of talking loudly. “The name Big Mouth came up because it honored our family tradition. We talk loud when we need to and it signified the simple premise of the Big Mouth brand - bigger is better - when it comes to toothbrushes. In the case of the Big Mouth toothbrush, it looks better, feels better, and it works better! It is silly to think that ‘one size fits all’ applies to anything, but it definitely does not apply to toothbrushes,” said Peterson in an interview.
In addition to her dental business, she also provides internships, and free orthodontic assessments, and is the author of Tanner's Teeth, a children's book that chronicles the life of the first African American dentist. She attributes her accomplishment to her father, who provided a road map for what a successful dentist should look like.
