There have been several rumors regarding the new South Korean president and his involvement in K-pop. We first had reports that presidential-elect Yoon Seok-yeol’s transfer committee would be discussing BTS’ military exemption which turned out to be untrue. However, they have been meetings with big K-pop labels to discuss policies in favor of the flourishing Korean entertainment industry. There were also rumors that the committee was planning to open up the Blue House (presidential office) as a tourist spot and host cultural events like K-pop and traditional performances.

And the latest report that has come in is that the committee was discussing BTS’ performance at Yoon Seok-yeol’s inauguration ceremony as the next president of South Korea. The chairman of the team in charge Park Joo-sun shared on a KBS radio show on April 5 that they were discussing BTS’ appearance at the ceremony set to take place on May 10. Knetizens were not happy with this news as Park added, “It's more important to focus on the core content than just looking flashy on the outside.”

Will BTS perform at the inauguration?

Park explained that Yoon Seok-yeol wanted the ceremony to encourage common people to have dreams. But it did not translate well with the general public as many took to online chat forums to share their displeasure as they felt BTS was being treated like “servants”. They compared the new shift in power to the likes of North Korea and asked them to leave BTS alone. They were also worried about the outcome if BTS refused to perform. Well, amidst the public outcry, BTS’ label Big Hit Music has responded to the news.

Big Hit surprised everyone by stating that they themselves did not know about the performance and only found out through news reports and the KBS radio show with Park Joo-sun. The label added, “BTS has not received any form of invitation that we know of yet.”

'They are too busy'

Fans hoped that BTS would not perform and made tweets like, “BH damaging promotions to politicians is always my best news.” Another commented, “A good news!! 👏🏻And I hope they never receive invitation either.” One joked, “LMFAO GOOD THEY ARE TOO BUSY BEING WORLD STARS.” Another user added, “Korean Armys 🤝 Intl Armys: ‘The boys are all booked up and busy. Find someone else’.”

With Yoon being openly campaigning against women’s rights, one fan commented, “BTS have done a lot for women empowerment, equality and inclusivity, making them perform at Yoon’s inauguration would be against everything they stand for.” Another fan hoped BTS had another schedule on the day of the ceremony, “Pray that the BBMAS come through so that they can politely decline.”
