What are the BET Awards?

The BET Awards is an award show that was established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate artists from the African-American community. The ceremony honors the best of talents in music, acting, sports and other fields of entertainment over the past year. The annual presentation ceremony features performances by artists, and some of the awards of more popular interest are presented in a televised ceremony.

Renowned sculptor Carlos “Mare 139” Rodriguez designed the coveted trophy which is inspired by three words – aspire, ascend and achieve. The inaugural ceremony took place in 2001 at the Paris Las Vegas resort in Las Vegas. From 2002 to 2005, the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood hosted the awards. Since 2013, the event is being hosted at the Microsoft Theater.
