BAFTAs 2020: Margot Robbie reads out Brad Pitt's jokes about Brexit and Megxit and fans call it a 'savage' move
Brad Pitt dropped out from attending the BAFTAs 2020 but the actor, who was nominated for his role in 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' for Best Supporting Actor still managed to make heads turn at London's Royal Albert Hall
Brad Pitt was set to attend the British Academy Film and Television Awards 2020, but he reportedly “pulled out” of appearing at the ceremony due to “family obligations”. However, the actor, who was nominated for his role in 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' for Best Supporting Actor still managed to make heads turn at London's Royal Albert Hall.
Margot Robbie, who co-stars alongside Brad and Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie, accepted the trophy on his behalf and read his speech out loud. Replete with Brexit and Megxit jokes, it read, "Hey Britain, heard you just became single. Welcome to the club. Wishing you the best with the divorce settlement."
Poking fun at Megxit after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from their senior roles in the Royal Family and moved to Canada, Robbie continued, "He says he is going to name this Harry because he is really excited about bringing it back to the States with him. His words, not mine."
No sooner did she make the tongue-in-cheek remarks, the house erupted with laughter and the camera panned on to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Twitter is buzzing with shock after Robbie's speech on Pitt's behalf. "Who knew #BradPitt had jokes. Keeping it rolling all #awardseason #BAFTA," one tweet read and another said, "Shoutout to Brad Pitt give that man his Oscar and please tell me that cameraman had the camera glued to Cambridges when Harry was mentioned #BAFTA." One fan posted, "Brad Pitt is really doing the most this campaign trail. Best moment of the night and he's not even there lol! #BAFTA."
One Twitter user posted, "Brad’s speech also opened pointing out the similarity between Pitt and the UK: 'Hey Britain, I heard you recently became single. Welcome to the club' to an eruption of laughter," and another wrote, "Brad Pitt isn’t even here but got Margot Robbie to read out his speech where he named his Bafta Harry as it’s coming back to North America. In case cameras moved away, Kate & William took the joke well."
"Brad is getting more savage with every award what is he gonna say at the Oscars?" one fan wondered and another said, "Brad Pitt being Harry and Meghan stan is how I love this story!!!" The actor seems to have made a clean sweep this awards season and fans are rooting for him before the big Academy Awards night.
