While nearly every major entertainment studio had come to a standstill and is only now returning to work with safety regulations in place, Netflix has been providing us with a steady supply of entertainment over the past few months. The streaming service has quite a few releases for September as well, among them, the return of its second Turkish original, 'Atiye' aka 'The Gift'.

'The Gift', much like Netflix's first Turkish original series, 'The Protector', has elements of fantasy and is steeped in history. However, unlike 'The Protector', 'The Gift' is led by a female character whose role is only set to get more important in the upcoming second season. Read on to know more details.

Release date

'The Gift' Season 2 will be available to stream on Netflix from Thursday, September 10, at 12 am PST.

Plot

In the first season of 'The Gift', we saw the titular character, Atiye, come to terms with her gifts. When we first met her, Atiye was an up and coming artist, who painted one peculiar symbol in all of her paintings, albeit in different styles — a symbol that she keeps seeing in nightmares. Before things unravel, she is also happily engaged to Ozan. However, when archaeologists, led by Erhan, discover the same symbol at the Gobekli Tepe, an ancient temple in Turkey which is believed to be the world's oldest, Atiye drives down there seeking answers. Over the course of the first season, we learn that she comes from a line of women who were magical — her mother resented that and ostracized her own mother — while Atiye's sister, Cansu, was adopted. Cansu's parents were killed in an orchestrated accident by the same people who are after Atiye now — and Ozan's father, Serdar, may be involved.

When Cansu is killed, Atiye seeks Erhan's help and goes to Gobekli Tepe, knowing that a door at the ancient site will help her sister back. There, Atiye sees Cansu in the center of the room and says she wants to bring her back. The next thing we see is Atiye back in the city. But this time, when she goes to meet Cansu, the latter says her name is Elif and that she does not know her. By bringing Cansu back, Atiye may have reached even deeper into the past and changed things for the second season. Now, with a different present — where her mother is in an asylum and Erhan is engaged to be married to another woman, Cansu was never adopted and goes by Elif and no one knows her. Additionally, the Gobekli Tepe — called so because it resembles the belly of a pregnant woman — is gone and pregnant women are dying. Atiye must defeat the evil forces at work — which includes Ozan's father, Serdar, — and protect the childbearing women.
