'Asteroid City': Scarlett Johansson earned way less for Wes Anderson film compared to her MCU roles
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Scarlett Johansson has been an integral part of Hollywood for decades now and is most popularly known for playing Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow in the MCU. Although, her career trajectory expands to several other films, and since her exit from the MCU, she has taken on several interesting projects.
Johansson is set to appear in Wes Anderson’s ‘Asteroid City’ raising questions about how much she earned for this particular film. Johansson is one of the highest-paid celebrities in Hollywood, however, by the looks of it, she has faced a significant pay cut for ‘Asteroid City.’
How much did Johansson earn for ‘Asteroid City’?
Johansson looks phenomenal in ‘Asteroid City’ alongside several talented celebrities including Tom Hanks, Maya Hawke, Jason Schwartzman, Adrien Brody, Steve Carell, and Edward Norton, among several others. Anderson’s latest film might have the same palette and aesthetic (and a few cast members) as the rest of his films, but ‘Asteroid City’ belongs to the science-fiction genre. Johansson is no stranger to the genre, and proves as an asset to the film, but does her paycheck reflect that fact?
After an interview with Variety, it was revealed that Johansson earned $4,131 a week for two months while filming ‘Asteroid City.’ According to this figure, Johansson’s salary for the Anderson film barely reaches $250,000, which is a significant drop for the actress. It is unclear why Johansson settled for a salary this low but it looks like you can’t put a price on the Anderson experience.
Johansson's marvelous money
Johansson has been a part of the MCU since ‘Iron Man 2’ which was released in 2010. Although her character, Black Widow, was killed in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ she returned to Marvel one last time for the 2021 movie, ‘Black Widow’ alongside Florence Pugh. Johansson’s exit from MCU was a huge loss for the franchise, along with Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans. As per ScreenRant, Johansson’s debut in ‘Iron Man 2’ earned her $400,000, which is already much higher than what she has made with ‘Asteroid City.’
In addition to that, her salary with Marvel kept increasing as the years went by the time ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ rolled in, she was reportedly paid a whopping $15 million upfront. Despite not having her own trilogies like Evans, Downey Jr, and Chris Hemsworth (who got four solo films), Johansson was one of the highest-paid celebrities in Marvel. Her paycheck for ‘Asteroid City’ is a massive downgrade for Marvel, but being in an Anderson film comes with a lifetime of experiences and the coveted Anderson mark.
