Mikenley Brown's almost encounter with death opened her eyes

Kenley revealed in the audition that she was bullied in school for her voice, beliefs, and the way she dressed and this led to low self-esteem and she developed anorexia. She shared, "At my last hospital visit the doctor said you are going to die and that opened my eyes." This audition for Kenley is very important as it is her chance to prove to the world she has overcome her demons. The opportunity to be on 'American Idol' led her to find her voice again as singing was her solace during her tough times. Being on this show has also been a dream come true for the young artist and it's like she has been reborn.

For her 'American Idol' audition, Kenley's dad Mike who is her "best friend" accompanied her and played the guitar. She chooses to perform Rihana's song 'Love on the Brain'. Kenley's rich voice gets a standing ovation after her unique take on the hit song. Luke remarks, "You just got a thing. You appear to have been born to do this." Lionel compliments her style, and Katy declares, "Top 24 — at the very least!" Katy also added, "You have to go on a journey to find self-love and thank god you found it before you started." Lionel even advises Kenley to throw her past out the window and leave it behind. Mikenly is on her way to Hollywood!

Fans think 'sob story' got Mikenley to Hollywood

Though Kenley's harrowing ordeal gained the sympathy of many viewers and they hate that she was bullied, her performance failed to move them. A lot of the fans think Kenley's singing was not up to the mark and there was room for a lot of improvement. One fan commented, "Sorry but I don't think she can sing needs a little work." Another said, "Nah she really wasn’t amazing. Pretty average." One more fan added, "Not a fan of her singing though."

Fans believe that Kenley's singing was average and without her back story, she might not have gotten a golden ticket. They are also tired of listening to these sad tales on 'American Idol' as one fan said, "I can really do without the sob stories."Another one said," That wasn't good at all too pitchy. I don't know what the judges are hearing but they are letting too many people go through to Hollywood week and a lot of these singers are going to be cut ✂️ and go home because they are not ready for the big time. Not everyone will make it through the first few rounds. Just goes to show you another sad story the judges will let you go through." One more added, "I didn’t like it at all."

'American Idol' Season 21 airs every Sunday at 8 pm ET on ABC.
