The film is written and directed by Academy Award nominee Noah Baumbach who speaking about his film told Indiewire, "Because I’ve gone through a divorce and also been through it as a child, there are things from my experience that of course, I could draw from. But it also gave me a real opportunity to talk to friends of mine. I mean, so many people have gone through this experience, and it’s not spoken about a lot."

Trailers:

The happy notes on which the trailer for ‘Marriage Story’ begins gives little indication of the emotionally devastating ride it is. It starts with Driver and Johansson listing the various things they like about each other — “She is a mother who plays; who really plays”, “What I love about Charlie: he loves being a dad. He loves all the things you’re supposed to hate, like waking up at night”, “She knows when to push me and when to leave me alone”, “He never lets other people keep him from what he wants to do” and more. Before you know it, however, the shot shifts to a courtroom: their divorce trial. The trailer follows the one-happy couple as they try and navigate their way through what is clearly a heart-breaking divorce. And a divorce never just affects the couple involved. Johansson can be seen trying to handle friends and family, and a mother who is very attached to her son-in-law. Driver is trying to handle work and the idea of never really being able to be a parent to his child hereon after.
One of the scenes that particularly tugs at your heartstrings is when Driver and Johansson suddenly realize they are pulling their son in different directions, quite literally. “It’s not as simple as not being in love anymore,” says Johansson near the end of the trailer. And that is what the story is: a complicated ending, but an ending nonetheless.
