Set in the 1990s, Netflix’s ‘Derry Girls’ is the story of five teenagers living in Ireland during the height of the Northern Ireland conflict. But the time of the events of the show, “the Troubles” has been around for enough time for the general public to be desensitized to the marches and profiling to an extent.

In fact, even though the conflict brews in the background, the teens who form the titular Derry Girls, are more concerned about pulling a fast one on the adults, passing tests by hook or by crook, getting popular, finding boys to impress, and primarily surviving high school

The show is usually always set in the Catholic girls' secondary school that the teens attend, or Erin’s house, where the lives of her father Gerry, mother Mary, Mary’s younger sister and Orla’s sister Sarah, and Erin’s maternal grandfather Joe also become a part of the show’s narrative.

Cast:

The role of the temperamental Erin is portrayed by the talented Saoirse-Monica Jackson, while her “strange” cousin Orla is played perfectly by Louisa Harland. Nicola Coughlan and Jaimee-Lee O’Donnell portray their anxious friend Claire and their wild child of a friend Michelle respectively. Michelle’s cousin James, who is often on the receiving end of unwarranted heat solely because of his English roots, is portrayed by Dylan Llewellyn.

Siobhan McSweeney portrays the ridiculously hilarious and unbelievable sarcastic Sister Michael. Tommy Tiernan portrays Erin’s Dad Gerry, while her Grandad Joe who despises Gerry and is still rooting for her parents’ divorce is portrayed by Ian McElhinney.
