'American Song Contest' Semifinals 2: AleXa becomes first K-pop artist to reach finals

Every single K-pop idol is hustling to take K-pop international and it seems like idols are seemingly making it big in the global space. With BTS becoming an international household name, and the fourth-gen idol like Johnny from NCT being invited to the 2022 MET Gala as well as GOT7’s Bambam becoming the only K-pop idol to perform at the NBA half-time, the genre and its idols have achieved a lot on the global stage.

On May 3 it was announced that K-pop soloist AleXa who is also known as Kim Seri was the first and only K-pop idol to reach the finals of the NBC music program ‘American Song Contest’. The ‘American Song Contest’ is the largest all-live US music contest, in which 56 artists representing 50 states and 5 overseas territories compete for the top hit song in the US.

AleXa reaches the finals of ‘American Song Contest’

On the show, AleXa who is of mixed race represented her birth state, Oklahoma. AleXa made her debut on the show as the only K-pop idol to appear on stage on March 21 when she performed her unreleased song, ‘Wonderland’, and took the stage by storm. The show has been airing on NBC in the United States over the last eight weeks with singer Kelly Clarkson and rapper Snoop Dogg among the many popular pop stars who appear as hosts of the show.

The American show is adapted from the European version of the contest called ‘Eurovision Song Contest’ and K-pop soloist AleXa came to be the first-ever idol to be selected as a finalist. Over the course of the show, AleXa has been seen performing splendidly which has a lot of eyes set on how she will do in the finals. While AleXa is not new to survival shows or singing competitions, a lot of attention has been garnered towards her being selected as one of the finalists in an American music program.



 

For her quarter-final stage, Alexa teamed up with four elite dancers for an eccentric performance which showed her stage presence given the rigorous training she has received in the process of becoming an idol. Fans of the show had been talking about how AleXa took on the stage and made it her own with the help of her detailed choreography as well as her magnetic stage presence. In the past ​​AleXa has appeared in many survival shows like ‘Rising Legends’ back in 2016 as well as ‘Produce 48’ in the year 2018 before making her debut as a soloist in 2019.
