The series started filming near Hoonah, Alaska, and Chichagof Island, and later other seasons were filmed in Okanogan County, Washington. Though it is a reality TV series, they have received flak from critics who have labeled the show as scripted/fake.

Discovery Channel's official synopsis for the series states, "Deep in the Alaskan wilderness lives a family who, for the last 30 years, has lived in the wild. For this family sharing their front yard with some of the world's most dangerous animals is just part of life."
