Spoilers for 'Agents of SHIELD' Season 7 Episode 4 'Out of the Past'

'Agents of SHIELD' has been taking a fun trip through Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) history in its seventh and final season. So far, the team has made stops in 1931 and 1955 and now they're moving on to the 1970s. So what's significant about the 1970s for SHIELD you ask? Well, for one thing, the Tesseract was in SHIELD custody at the time but there's something a lot smaller than an Infinity Stone that's just as important.

During the 1970s, Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) was working as a SHIELD consultant and researcher. As revealed in 'Avengers: Endgame', Pym had already discovered the miraculous size-changing Pym particles by 1970. What the Chronicoms could want with Pym particles is anyone's guess but 'Endgame' did reveal that they can be used as a tool for time-travel so maybe that could be a reason. Another possibility is that the Chronicoms might want to kill Pym in the past before he can become Ant-Man.

Without Hank Pym, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) would never have become Ant-Man and if there was no Ant-Man, the Avengers would never have managed to pull off the time heist that saved everyone in 'Endgame'. That makes Pym a pretty big thread that could potentially unravel the entire timestream. Then again, for all we know, Pym might not have anything to do with the story and Episode 5 titled 'A Trout in the Milk' could be about something else entirely. The show has subverted a lot of expectations in its final season but seeing as they did bring in the Super Soldier Serum in Episode 1, it seems only fair to give another Avenger a homage as well.

In any case, the team is bound to have their hands full with the Chronicoms having promised Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) that they would start getting messy in their efforts to defeat SHIELD. Coming from an alien killer robot, that's a pretty ominous threat and we can't wait to see what the (relative) future might bring.

'Agents of SHIELD' Season 7 airs Wednesdays at 10 pm ET on ABC.
