'65': Critics slam Adam Driver's sci-fi movie for 'lacking any engaging factor'

The movie is finally out, along with the reviews, which shows us the heavy slamming from the critics' side. '65' currently holds a rating of 36% on the Tomatometer.

'Nowhere near good enough'
The critics are heavily attacking the sci-fi movie, with many criticizing the unsurprising template of the movie. David Fear of Rolling Stone noted the lack of any engaging factors in the movie by adding, "It’s not schlocky enough to be so-bad-it’s-good and nowhere near good enough to be taken even a tiny bit seriously." Todd Gilchrist of Variety opined, "Given its title, it’s tough to know what details in “65” qualify as a surprise or “spoiler” — and anyway, the movie immediately tells you when and where it’s happening. What it doesn’t do, however, is tell you why it’s happening; other than its stardate, this is just another story about an overworked father neglecting his kid in the name of providing for her future." Benjamin Lee from The Guardian penned, "Perhaps if it had been truly tell-everyone-on-Twitter terrible, then maybe it would at least be remembered by the time it swiftly lands on plane movie rotation but 65 veers between fine and slightly less than, never quite bringing the fun we were expecting."
'Underwhelming Sci-Fi Actioner'
Frank Scheck from 'The Hollywood Reporter' noted '65' as an "underwhelming sci-fi actioner" by adding, "what could have been a perfectly viable B-picture back in the day now just seems rather low-rent compared with the sci-fi blockbusters of recent years. (After all, how are you gonna keep them down on the farm after they’ve seen Jurassic World?) Although 65 does boast the novelty of Driver blazing away at the dinos with cool high-tech weaponry, the sort that Jeff Goldblum would no doubt have appreciated having." While Brian Lowry from CNN.com commented on the overused concept of a plot by saying, "There’s a reason such films have, in theatrical terms, been pushed to the brink of extinction, and 65 represents such an uninspired effort as to look like a fossil even before the credits roll." David Fear of Rolling Stone said, "Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, shot this mid-budget action-thriller mid-Covid, cleaving to that kind of B-movie template, and aiming, but failing, to match those emotional stakes." Richard Roeper of Chicago Sun-Times noted, "This loony, murky and muddled sci-fi action semi-thriller takes a detour through B-Movie Lane in a film that isn’t compelling enough to make for silly popcorn entertainment but isn’t terrible enough to be labeled a disaster".
'65' is currently running exclusively on theaters.
