'Yellowstone; which is set in modern times showcases the latest threats to the Duttons. From land developers trying to grab the wild and protected fragile ecosystem for building malls, airports, high rise buildings, and more, the contending forces are manageable in the 21st Century. Politics also play a major part in creating problems for each of the Duttons in their mission to protect the family ranch and its area with politicians playing mind games and making power plays for their greedy objectives.
This is where '1883' comes in to transport us back in time to the 19th century. The prequel to 'Yellowstone' showcases the threats the people faced back in olden times and is quite refreshing and exciting yet grim to witness. We see Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott) crying on the steps of his house and we soon learn why when he goes upstairs. A sickly scene shows his daughter lying dead in bed, with her eyes open and her body covered in yellow pustules. The young girl was lost to the then deadly smallpox and we learn that his wife too was taken away from him due to the same reason. As he burns the house down with their bodies to stop the spread we can't ignore the stark contrast the timeline brings in situations.
We later also see people with the disease destined to die and be cast out of society. There is wildness in society with merciless looters on horses shooting with no qualms to steal things and shootings in the street being common. Everyone has a gun and no one will hesitate to shoot a man. Even the natives are extremely dangerous and kill people with bows and arrows for a thrilling, yet gruesome premise.
'1883' offers brand new threats with the blast from the past ever so captivating and shocking. Fans of 'Yellowstone' can look forwards to this brilliant change of scenery with much more danger to come with its prequel.
'1883' is now streaming on Paramount+ with new episodes dropping weekly.
