For those who hoped for sparks to fly in 'Wonder Woman 1984' between Diana Prince/Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and Barbara Ann Minerva/Cheetah (Kristen Wiig), there's disappointment in the waiting. With Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) returning back from the dead, director Patty Jenkins has all but confirmed in her interview with Heroic Hollywood that the love story focus would be solely between Diana and Steve.

"It might have in a different storyline," Jenkins opined. "But because this storyline was so clearly about Steve (Trevor, played by Chris Pine) coming back, the whole story was about Steve. It's all a love story with Steve. There wasn't room for two for Diana."

Leading us to delve into the complicated relationship between Wonder Woman and Cheetah. It is a known fact the two were friends, very close ones in fact. A Reddit thread based on 'Wonder Woman #3' has had people talking about the complex relationship between the two. One of the sequences sees Cheetah put into submission by Diana after a battle.

The comic's storyline sees the Diana vs Barbara battle end on an emotional note for the latter. According to Screenrant, the scene begins with Diana seeking the foe out and withstanding one lightning slash and a claw after another, all the while imploring Barbara to listen to her. In the end, Barbara yields breaking down to tears.

If anything, the trailer had prompted fans to speculate if a queer relationship was on the cards. The relationship between Wiig and Gadot's characters starts off as them being friends, just like it does in the Greg Rucka, Nicola Scott's 'Wonder Woman: Year One' comic. Falling under the "Rebirth Relaunch" category, there was a slew of changes. For starters, Minerva was a lesbian. The second was the much-awaited news that Diana was bi-sexual. Prior to Steve Trevor, she was in a relationship with an Amazonian, Kasia.

Add to this is the fact the duo's discussion about love sees Diana a tad bit jittery leading fans to deduce there might be a start of something close to a relationship angle, at least from Minerva's end. Even though it could be argued that Trevor's re-entry might have prompted the villainy, it is still a lot of speculation. However, this is one theory that cannot be ignored.

'Wonder Woman 1984' releases on August 12, 2020.
