'The Morning Show' Season 5 casts a two-time Emmy winner and his billionaire role could stir big trouble
‘The Morning Show’ is getting another big name. According to a report from Deadline, veteran actor Jeff Daniels has officially joined the upcoming fifth season of the Apple TV+ series. And no, it’s not just a quick cameo or blink-and-you-miss-it guest spot. Daniels will appear in a recurring role, stepping into the shoes of Lukas, a billionaire who built his fortune from the ground up and now runs a major investment firm. The show already revolves around the messy, high-stakes world of television news, where careers can rise or fall in a heartbeat. So, bringing in a self-made financial heavyweight sounds like a recipe for new complications. Daniels will be joining a cast that’s already packed with familiar faces.
Leading the series are Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, who also serve as executive producers and portray rival media personalities navigating the unpredictable terrain of broadcast journalism. But that’s only part of the lineup. Returning for the next season are actors including Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Nestor Carbonell, Karen Pittman, Nicole Beharie, and Jon Hamm. Behind the camera, the series continues to be guided by showrunner Charlotte Stoudt, while longtime collaborator Mimi Leder returns to direct and help oversee production as an executive producer. The show comes from the independent studio Media Res, with producers Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer also attached.
Apple TV+ hasn’t yet revealed exactly when the fifth installment of 'The Morning Show' will arrive on the streaming service. The show itself hasn’t exactly been struggling for attention. The third season alone picked up 16 Emmy nominations, a pretty healthy haul by any standard. One of those wins went to Crudup, who earned his second Emmy for portraying media executive Cory Ellison in the supporting actor category. For viewers who might not have followed every update, the story timeline recently jumped forward. Season 4 is set during spring 2024, focusing on what happens roughly two years after the events of the previous season.
By that point, a major corporate development, the merger between networks UBA and NBN, had already taken place. That deal changed everything. With the merger complete, the newsroom found itself dealing with new responsibilities and shifting power structures. Reporters and executives wrestled with difficult questions about truth, influence, and credibility in a divided political environment. As for Daniels, he’s hardly a stranger to playing complicated figures in stories connected to politics, media, or power. The actor previously won Emmy Awards for his performances in ‘The Newsroom’ and ‘Godless.’
