LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: ‘Queen of Tears’ Season 1, which ended on Sunday, April 28, has soared to the heights of K-Drama fandom, charming audiences on both tvN and Netflix with its heartwarming plot. Despite being initially labeled as a limited series, its immense popularity has left fans yearning for more.

Right from the start, ‘Queen of Tears’ was hailed as the romantic drama of the year, boasting a powerhouse team. With esteemed writer Park Ji-eun, acclaimed for her work on ‘Crash Landing On You’, and directors Jang Young-woo and Kim Hee-won, known for their stellar contributions to ‘Mr. Sunshine’ and ‘Vincenzo’, respectively, the series was destined for greatness.

And let's not forget the stellar cast, featuring ‘It’s Okay Not To Be Okay’ star Kim Soo-hyun and ‘Fight For My Way’ star Kim Ji-won. Their on-screen chemistry has sparked dating rumors, adding to the excitement among fans who are eager for more.

Is ‘Queen of Tears’ Season 2 in the works?

‘Queen of Tears’ has been a sensation, earning impressive viewership ratings both in South Korea and globally on Netflix. Despite its popularity, there's been no official word from Netflix about a second season as of April 2024.

Korean dramas often follow a pattern where additional seasons are planned in advance. However, ‘Queen of Tears’ was conceived as a limited series, suggesting that its story arc will conclude by the end of its initial run.

In a departure from the usual pattern, tvN has announced two special episodes to air after ‘Queen of Tears’ Season 1 finale. This decision offers fans a unique opportunity to delve deeper into the characters and their world, even as the series draws to a close.

When will ‘Queen of Tears’ special episodes air?

On April 9, in an unusual move, tvN announced the airing of two special episodes following the conclusion of ‘Queen of Tears’ Season 1. A translated tweet from the official tvN X account indicates that the main cast will return for these special episodes and invites fans to submit questions for the cast to answer.

This decision likely stems from the immense popularity of the show and aims to offer fans additional content. However, it's improbable that these episodes will significantly advance the plot; instead, they may consist of scenes that didn't make it into the season or the cast addressing fan inquiries.

Scheduled for Saturday, May 4, and Sunday, May 5, these additional episodes could mark a novel approach for showrunners to further explore a story or provide additional satisfaction without committing to a full season.

What could ‘Queen of Tears’ Season 2 plot be?

Should a Season 2 of ‘Queen of Tears’ miraculously materialize, the only plausible direction for the story would entail Eun-sung and Seul-hee's continued battle against the Queen Group. However, this path would inevitably rob the Season 1 finale of its significant resolutions. Moreover, it would likely postpone the resolution of Hae-in and Hyun-woo's central relationship.

On all fronts, this outcome would be highly undesirable, undermining the remarkable groundwork laid in the initial episodes. Speculatively, it seems more likely that the series will culminate in a satisfying conclusion, with the additional episodes serving as supplementary content to ease fans through the inevitable post-finale mourning period.

All 16 episodes of ‘Queen of Tears’ Season 1 are currently available to stream on Netflix
