James Cameron reveals a major 'Avatar 4' timeline shift as 'Fire and Ash' drops in theaters
When director James Cameron brings forth his vision to the big screen, it is bound to be a landmark event. The celebrated filmmaker and box-office wizard had previously broken all records with the release of his first 'Avatar' film in 2009. The world of Pandora, with its huge blue residents, was forever etched in the hearts of the audience who flocked to witness the grand movie, thanks to the skilful use of cutting-edge motion capture imagery and special effects. More than a decade later, Cameron followed it up with 'Avatar: The Way of Water' in 2022. As the latest movie in the trilogy, 'Avatar: Fire and Ash', hits theatres today, Cameron has revealed a significant detail that can reshape the future of the popular franchise.
Cameron has been promoting his latest film over the course of the past few weeks, and while doing so in an interview with Vanity Fair, he shed exclusive light on his approach to the 'Avatar' films. While it was previously believed that 'Avatar: Fire & Ash' and 'Avatar 4', which is supposed to release on December 21, 2029, would be separated from each other in the timeline by a period of about six years, Cameron's comments indicated that the time jump would be greater than that, running up to eight years. He also explained that practical exigencies forced him and the cast and crew to film certain scenes from 'Avatar 4' way in advance, before the film was officially greenlit by Disney and 20th Century Fox.
Cameron said, "All the actors worked for 18 months. This isn't like rocking up to a lectern and in two days, doing an entire voice part for an animated film, a Pixar animated film. Everything you see those characters do, the actors did. It took 18 months to do the two movies. So, about nine months of capture for each film. But it was intermixed. We'd do 'Avatar 2' scene one day, and a '3' scene the next day. Even some stuff on '4'. 'Cause all the characters jumped forward in age about eight years between the end of '3' and start of '4'."
ITM reports that this development would significantly impact the world of Pandora. For starters, the 'Avatar' saga, which had been previously marketed as a trilogy, would now be akin to an epic novel such as Tolstoy's 'War & Peace'. Moreover, an eight-year time-jump would lead to important narrative consequences. As described by The Direct, the events of 'Avatar 4' would take place a quarter of a century removed from the events of the original 2009 movie. In this scenario, the first half of the movie would see Jake and Neytiri's children as being the same age as they were in 'Avatar: Fire and Ash'.
However, the latter half of the film would bring them up to be young adults. Lo'ak, the official narrator of the movie, would be in his early twenties, similar to how Kiri played Sigourney Weaver. The youngest child, Tuk, would have stepped into her teenage years, and Jake and Neyitiri will be in their late thirties and forties. 'Avatar: Fire & Ash' is currently screening only in theaters.
