'Avatar' star in talks to join Sophie Turner in Amazon's 'Tomb Raider' series — here's everything we know
The highly anticipated TV series remake of 'Tomb Raider' is bringing in a versatile movie star to join its cast, and fans couldn't be more excited. Based on the famous computer games, the series stars Sophie Turner as the action-packed protagonist. Ever since its announcement, every update about the show has only added to its growing hype. Now, with the news of an Oscar-nominated star joining the Amazon series, the wait for the show has become even harder.
The actress in discussion is Sigourney Weaver, who is in talks to join Amazon's upcoming 'Tomb Raider' series, though no deal has been finalized yet; her character details, too, remain under wraps, as per Variety. Weaver, best known for her iconic role as Ellen Ripley in the 'Alien' franchise, has an impressive genre resume, including the 'Avatar' films, the Marvel Netflix series 'The Defenders', and the upcoming 'Star Wars' film 'The Mandalorian and Grogu', set to release in 2026.
Not only that, but Weaver is also a three-time Oscar nominee, recognized for 'Aliens', 'Gorillas in the Mist', and 'Working Girl'. While her career has focused mostly on film, she has taken a few regular TV roles, including 'Political Animals' and Amazon's 'The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart'. Talking about Turner's casting, the actress said she was "thrilled beyond measure" to take on the role of Lara Croft, adding, "She's such an iconic character, who means so much to so many, and I am giving everything I've got," as per BBC.
Talking about the legacy of previous portrayals, Turner said, "They're massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands." Turner added, "I can't wait for you all to see what we have cooking." For the unversed, following the success of the Tomb Raider video games, Angelina Jolie starred as Lara Croft in two early-2000s films.
Years later, Alicia Vikander then led a 2018 reboot that grossed $275 million but received mixed reviews, which prevented a sequel, as per ScreenRant. The franchise later debuted on TV with the animated Netflix series 'Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft,' starring Hayley Atwell, whose second and final season dropped on Thursday, December 11.
