LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Nowadays, it’s pretty normal to conclude the movie with a cliffhanger ending so that they can make a franchise out of it. Whether a sequel or a prequel is announced or not, every filmmaker is making a movie so that it could be taken further. Julius Avery’s latest horror movie ‘The Pope’s Exorcist’ is one of those movies that ended with a question mark and make the fans interested in knowing what lies ahead.

So, ‘The Pope’s Exorcist’ chronicles the journey of Father Gabriele Amorth (Russell Crowe), former chief exorcist of the Vatican, and everything that he has done in his life. He claimed that he performed over 160,000 exorcisms over the years and used to talk to the devil daily. It is believed that only The Pope could have summoned him. In the movie, veteran actor Russell Crowe plays the role of Father Amorth in the movie and tackles one of the most difficult cases of his career. A 12-year-old boy named Henry is possessed by a powerful demon and the entire family is scared. He just wants to meet Father Amorth because he only needs him.

After a long battle between good and evil, Father Amorth sacrifices himself in order to save the little boy. To make things even more interesting, Amorth’s associate comes right in the middle of the epic final fight and they both team together to defeat the evil. By doing this, they save themselves and the Vatican as well. However, the ending of the movie suggested that the journey hasn’t ended and we might see Father Amorth resolving more such cases.

‘The Pope’s Exorcist’: What happened at the end?

In the end, Father Amorth and his accomplice, Father Esquibel, stay in the Vatican City and they get to know that the map they found in the temple had a deeper meaning. While studying the map closely, people at the Vatican found out that there are 199 such locations where the demons still reside and can break the shackles at any time. So, the duo has to travel to each of those places and hunt the monsters down. Both of them seemed really happy by hearing that and the movie comes to an end.

‘The Pope’s Exorcist’: Is Sony developing a new universe?

The ending seems to give us an indication that Sony might want to take this franchise ahead with more movies. The production house is thinking of doing what New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. did with ‘The Conjuring Universe’. The franchise has been commercially successful, having grossed a combined $2.1 billion against a combined budget of $178 million, and is the highest-grossing horror franchise to date.

We believe it will all come down to box office numbers and if the numbers are good enough, Sony might think of turning this movie into another cinematic universe that might give us a lot of intriguing horror films.

Personally, we would love to see more of Father Amorth’s adventures on the big screen. Let’s see if Sony Pictures intends to do that or not.
