Glen Powell hints at major cameo as he teases new ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ show: ‘I’m going to...’
'Texas Chain Saw Massacre,’ the 1974 film that scarred our souls and spawned nine bloodier sequels, is coming back in style. Leatherface and his Texas-based family of freaks have already been reborn, reexamined, and revived more times than most serial killers. But this time, it’s going to be on TV under the A24 banner. A24 has recently acquired the rights and intends to develop this property into a series. The project will be managed by JT Mollner, the screenwriter of ‘The Long Walk’, and executive produced by Glen Powell.
Yes, the same actor who starred in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ as a fighter pilot is now involved in a project about a silent killer with a chainsaw and a mask made of human skin. Hollywood really does keep you on your toes. Powell was recently on the red carpet promoting his new film, ‘How to Make a Killing’. While chatting with Variety, he couldn’t dodge the inevitable question about the Texas-set horror story. While he didn’t spill much, he did dangle a little carrot. “We've got something really fun in the works,” he said with a smile.

Naturally, the follow-up came fast. Would Powell step in front of the camera for this one? Maybe even play Leatherface himself? The actor didn’t close the door all the way as he said, “You never know, but as of now I really think it’s probably just something for [my production company] Barnstorm to produce, but I’m definitely going to be very involved.” Let’s be honest here. Leatherface doesn’t talk. He grunts, chases, and swings that chainsaw like it’s an extension of his arm. It is difficult to imagine Powell muffling himself behind a mask for a whole season.
If he did show up onscreen in any form, it would be quite the little full-circle moment. One of his early breakout parts was on ‘Scream Queens,’ Ryan Murphy’s campy, blood-soaked series. The actor scored a role as frat president Chad Radwell. But that series ended in 2016, and since then, Powell hasn’t really dallied in the land of horror. He’s been busy elsewhere, taking on romantic comedies, action blockbusters, and much more. His producing résumé has also grown, though most of those efforts kept him in front of the lens as well.
He produced and starred in ‘Hit Man’, directed by Richard Linklater, and he’s attached to ‘Chad Powers.’ In other words, he hasn’t exactly been hiding behind the curtain. Meanwhile, his acting slate isn’t slowing down either. He’s set to appear in ‘The Great Beyond’ from J.J. Abrams and an untitled comedy from Judd Apatow. The man clearly doesn’t believe in sitting still. As for 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ series, the details are murky at best. Plot? Sealed under secrecy. Cast? Unknown. Tone? That’s anyone’s guess.
