Why Marvel broke Super Bowl trailer streak with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and when it might actually release?
In what came as a major dampener for fans, Marvel Studios did not drop any new footage of 'Avengers: Doomsday' during Super Bowl LX. This comes after previous reports suggested there would not be a Marvel trailer this time around, marking the first time since 2012 that they have broken their trend of releasing new clips during the marquee sporting event.
Ahead of the event, Deadline's report read, "Word is Marvel Studios, which has Avengers: Doomsday (Dec. 18) and 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' with Sony (July 31) is sitting out in what’s arguably a Super Bowl anomaly." Previously, all four 'Avengers' films had promos released during the Super Bowl. At the time of writing, the franchise has not provided any official explanation for not promoting the film. Safe to speculate that the timing of the film's release and 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' may have something to do with it.
'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' is the next major release from the studios. And while it is slated to release on July 31, there are no trailer drops for the Tom Holland-starrer either. This could be due to the leaks that circulated in December last year. It is possible 'Spider-Man' will debut new footage before release, and 'Doomsday' is likely to release its trailer during the much-awaited San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC).
'Doomsday' has already generated enough buzz with the four mini-teasers released at regular intervals. The first one revealed the return of Chris Evans' Steve Rogers. The second focused on another OG Avenger, Thor (Chris Hemsworth). The X-Men made their MCU appearance in the third, with the final one featuring the Wakandans and the Fantastic Four. Thrown in the Russo Brothers dropping the odd pearl with their cryptic teasers, there's ample content to break down and theorize before the film's release in December.
The fifth 'Avengers' film sees the return of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Victor Von Doom. Also returning are Evans and Hemsworth, along with Tom Hiddleston as Loki. Other members of the cast include Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man, Letitia Wright as Shuri/Black Panther, Tenoch Huerta Mejía as Namor, and Winston Duke as M'Baku. The Fantastic Four quartet — Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as the Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the Thing return as well.
'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' sees the return of Holland as the friendly neighborhood web-slinger, along with Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned, and J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson. Joining the cast is Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, Jon Bernthal as The Punisher, and 'Stranger Things' star Sadie Sink in an undisclosed role.
The plots of both films have been kept under wraps, though rumors and leaks have been circulating on social media and Reddit. The previously leaked footage of 'Brand New Day' has since been deleted from all platforms, though some still circulate and spark chatter.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ releases December 18, 2026, in cinemas.
