'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie' trailer teases Wart and reveals 'The Lion King' voice actor as Yoshi
The final trailer for ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ has arrived, and along with it came a casting announcement. Universal finally confirmed who will voice one of the franchise’s most beloved characters. Donald Glover (‘The Lion King,’ ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’) will bring life to Yoshi, Mario’s loyal dinosaur companion. It’s a choice that caught plenty of fans off guard. Not in a bad way, though. The reveal took place during Nintendo Direct, where Illumination boss Chris Meledandri stepped in to settle weeks of online guessing. The internet had been busy trying to guess the mystery voice heard in earlier previews, but the real answer was rather unpredictable.
The trailer itself wastes no time getting into the story. This time, the adventure shoots far beyond the Mushroom Kingdom (literally), as Mario and his crew blast off into space. The film follows the familiar heroes, Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad, as they head into the cosmos to stop a new threat brewing among the stars. And the troublemaker stirring things up? Bowser Jr. The young Koopa prince appears front and center in the preview, determined to rescue his father from the Mario brothers while reclaiming control of the Koopa army. At one point in the footage, Peach’s castle is violently pulled away from the Mushroom Kingdom, setting off the chain of events that sends everyone racing across galaxies.
Bright colors, wild planets, and plenty of fast-paced action fill the screen, which is pretty much what people expect from a ‘Mario’ story. But the trailer also sneaks in a few extra surprises. For one, longtime fans catch a glimpse of Wart, a villain originally introduced in ‘Super Mario Bros. 2.’ And the voice behind Wart? That role goes to Luis Guzmán. Meanwhile, another new addition arrives in the form of Honey Queen from the Honey Hive Galaxy, voiced by Issa Rae. The returning cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, with Anya Taylor-Joy voicing Princess Peach and Charlie Day stepping back into Luigi’s shoes.
On the villain side, Jack Black once again brings his energy to Bowser. The supporting lineup includes Keegan-Michael Key, Benny Safdie, Brie Larson, and Kevin Michael Richardson. Behind the camera, the film reunites the creative team responsible for the earlier ‘Mario’ movie. Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are back in charge, while writer Matthew Fogel once again handles the script. Music duties are handled by composer Brian Tyler, who returns to craft the score. As for when audiences can finally see all this cosmic mayhem play out, the wait isn’t too long. ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ is scheduled to hit theaters on April 1.
