'Super Mario Galaxy Movie' lands Glen Powell as Fox McCloud in surprise casting reveal
'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie' is shaping up to be quite a spectacle, with the latest update revealing that Hollywood A-list actor Glen Powell will be voicing the character of Fox McCloud in the upcoming film. Powell took to his Instagram profile to make the announcement, posting a wordless video of himself running around inside a movie theater with the 'Super Mario Bros.' theme song playing in the background. Although it was officially announced that Fox McCloud will be joining the sequel movie, eagle-eyed fans were quick to spot a fleeting glimpse of the character from the world of the Nintendo game in the trailer of the upcoming movie.
Chris Pratt and Charlie Day will be reprising their characters of Mario and Luigi, respectively. As they launch into the unending frontiers of space, the duo will be joined by Jack Black as Bowser, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. The rest of the cast includes Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Brie Larson as Rosalina, and Donald Glover as Yoshi. On the other hand, Fox is famously known as the leading character of the 'Star Fox' action video game series. He's also an important original character in Nintendo's fighting game 'Super Smash Bros.' Alongside Donkey Kong, Luigi, and Yoshi, Fox has been playable across all the 'Smash Bros.' games.
Over the years, the 'Star Fox' game franchise has also featured other 'Mario' characters such as Bowser, Bowser Jr., Diddy Kong, and Rosalina. Fox's co-pilot, Falco Lombardi, and the villain Wolf O’Donnell from Fox's 'Star Fox' were eventually included in the 'Smash Bros' entries in the past. Apart from Fox, several other characters from the 'Smash Bros.' franchise crossover to the world of the upcoming sequel movie. The trailer of 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie' featured cameos of Pikmin, otherwise known as the plant-animal hybrids that are used by Captain Olimar from the 'Pikmin' Nintendo games. One could also spot a shot of R.O.B., a real-life toy accessory for the Nintendo Entertainment System. R.O.B. eventually became a fighter in 'Super Smash Bros.'
Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto had previously spoken out about his dislike for characters jumping across franchises in an interview with IGN, "In Nintendo, there's sort of like an unwritten rule, Mario needs to stay in the Mario universe, or Splatoon needs to stay in Splatoon, and we don't use different characters in the same place. But Pikmin has this kind of unwritten rule where they're okay to appear with other characters." Apparently, Fox is quite an exception in this regard. Elsewhere, Powell's most recent works include the thriller 'How To Make A Killing' and 'Running Man'. 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie' releases in theatres on Wednesday.
