The Skycedar siblings possess extraordinary abilities that allow them to teleport into a magical spirit realm, where they use their powers to help and protect spirit animals. The first season of 'Spirit Rangers' was released in 2022 and comprises ten episodes, each lasting about 20 minutes. It centers on the importance of being kind and doing good, and it stays true to its message in each episode, while also accurately representing Native American culture. The stunning visuals and engaging storylines are inspired by Native folklore and the American National Parks. The show was created by Karissa Valencia, an executive producer who shares a mixed Mexican and Chumash heritage with her characters. Valencia's personal experiences of navigating her mixed heritage, and being caught between modern society and Native culture, fueled her passion for creating culturally diverse children's shows.
With the increasing demand for representation in children's media, Spirit Rangers is a welcomed addition to the Representation Matters Collection, joining other shows like PBS KIDS' 'Molly of Denali' and Disney's upcoming adaptation of 'The Little Mermaid,' which features a black Ariel. Due to the show's success, Netflix has renewed Spirit Rangers for a second season, set to premiere on May 8, 2023. The adventures of the 'Spirit Rangers' celebrate the Native American community, nature, and history, making it an excellent choice for children's entertainment.
