'Bridgerton' Season 4: Who was Sophie Baek's mother? Everything we know from Julia Quinn novel series
Season 4 of 'Bridgerton' has been quite remarkable in several respects. For instance, there's the tantalising love story angle, also known as the Upstairs-Downstairs narrative, with Luke Thompson's Benedict Bridgerton falling for Sophie Baek, played by Yerin Ha. Not only is Benedict a member of the royalty, but also much higher in the world of the Regency-era drama as compared to Sophie. The latter is, but a lowly housemaid, and the two lovers are separated by deeply entrenched class lines. On the other hand, the fourth season also bears a strong resemblance to the classic tale of 'Cinderella,' especially in the way Benedict is love-struck by Sophie at the ball.
In a world where family background and pedigree matter the most, Sophie is most certainly an outsider. She grew up as a maid at her stepmother's house, accompanied by two sisters. As revealed by Sophie herself, her mother was a maid who fell in love with the Sixth Earl of Penwood, Richard Gun, who was Sophie's father. "My mother was a maid, and my father..." said Sophie in a heartwarming scene with Benedict on the Netflix show, before he cut her short, "was a nobleman...just like me." On the other hand, Sophie's stepmother, Araminta, shed some light on Sophie's past and her father's disposition when she recollected, "Richard was a good man, but he lived in a dream world. Thrust his biggest mistake on me with no warning and left me to face the consequences of harboring an illegitimate child."
The Fandom page for Julia Quinn's novel 'An Offer From A Gentleman,' on which Season 4 of the Netflix show is based, explains that Sophie was 'dropped off at her father's estate in the country by her dying grandmother' when she was three years old. This suggests that Sophie lived with her mother's family for a while before being raised by her father as his ward. In any case, as confirmed by the source material, Sophie's mother died very young and left her in her father's care.
The lack of pedigree further led Benedict to initially view Sophie as deserving of his pity. Perhaps this led him to offer her as his mistress, thus setting up the cliffhanger with which the first part of the fourth season concluded. Speaking about this, showrunner Jess Brownell had remarked in an interview with TVLine, "He should be seeing Sophie as more than her class, for him to make that ask in that moment, outrage is absolutely the right reaction. A lot of his progressiveness, not with his sexuality, but in other ways, has been performative. He is incredibly privileged and hasn’t really reckoned with that privilege." 'Bridgerton' is exclusively available on Netflix.
